David Lynch dies at age 78. He was an American filmmaker, visual artist, musician, and actor. He received critical acclaim for his films, which are often distinguished by their surrealist, dreamlike qualities. In a career spanning more than fifty years, he was awarded with numerous accolades, including the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 2006 and an Honorary Academy Award in 2019. Described as a "visionary", Lynch was considered one of the most important filmmakers of his era. He was born David Keith Lynch on January 20, 1946 in Missoula, Montana.

Bob Uecker dies at age 90 in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. He was an American professional baseball catcher and sportscaster who served as the primary broadcaster for the Milwaukee Brewers of Major League Baseball (MLB) for 54 seasons. Uecker signed with his hometown Milwaukee Braves in 1956, spending several years in the minor leagues with various affiliate clubs before making his major league  debut in 1962. As a backup catcher, he played for the Milwaukee Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Atlanta Braves from 1962 to 1967. He won a World Series with the Cardinals in 1964. After retiring from playing baseball, Uecker started a broadcasting career and served as a play-by-play announcer for Milwaukee Brewers radio broadcasts from 1971. Uecker became known for his self-deprecating wit and became a regular fixture on late night talk shows in the 1970s and 1980s, facetiously dubbed "Mr. Baseball" by TV talk show host Johnny Carson. Hitting for a lowly .200 batting average during his career, Bob Uecker had a humorous song written about him, which said, in part: "Bob Uecker, Bob Uecker's the name/Should be in the Hall of Fame." He hosted several sports blooper shows and had an acting career that included his role as George Owens on the television program Mr. Belvedere and as play-by-play announcer Harry Doyle in the film Major League and its two sequels. He was born Robert George Uecker on January 26, 1934 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Near Washington, D.C. in the evening, a PSA Airlines (doing business as American Eagle) jetliner carrying 64 people, originating in Wichita, Kansas, collides in midair with a U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter with three people on board and plunges into the Potomac River along with the helicopter as the jetliner is approaching Reagan National Airport in Virginia for a planned landing. Emergency responders search the debris field in the river for bodies and possible survivors; at least 18 bodies are recovered by 11:30 PM. (This is the first multi-fatality accident involving a commercial plane in the U.S. since February 12, 2009, when a plane crash near Buffalo, New York, killed 50 people.)

An airplane crashes 35 miles southeast of Nome, Alaska, killing all ten people on board. Bering Air Flight 445 was a scheduled domestic flight operated by Bering Air from Unalakleet Airport to Nome Airport in Alaska. The plane was a Cessna 808B Grand Caravan.

Salvage crews pull a large portion of the wreckage of the helicopter from the Potomac River that was involved in the helicopter-jetliner midair collision, and place the wreckage on a barge to be shipped to the nearby National Transportation Safety Boad headquarters for examination.
