Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin collapses on the field in Cincinnati after making a tackle of a Bengals player in the first quarter of play. He suffers cardiac arrest, is resuscitated and taken by ambulance to a hospital, is resuscitated once more after arriving at the hospital, and is in critical condition. The football game between the Bills and Bengals is not resumed. (It is decided a few days later that this game will not be rescheduled.)

The U.S. House of Representatives has its first session since the midterm elections, but it fails to elect a Speaker of the House after three ballot attempts. Republicans are in the majority in the U.S. House, but cannot come up with enough votes to elect front-running Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy, with 19 Republicans (and 20 on the third attempt) voting against him. The House cannot swear in new members nor conduct any other business until a Speaker is elected.

The high temperature for Baltimore reaches 69 degrees F, a new record for the highest temperature ever recorded for Baltimore on any January 3rd (up to this point) since recordkeeping began in 1871. This high temperature breaks the previous record of 68 degrees F that was set on January 3, 2000.

Jeff Beck dies at age 78 in East Sussex, England.  He was an English guitarist. He rose to prominence as a member of the rock band the Yardbirds in the 1960s, and afterwards founded and fronted the Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice. In 1975, he switched to an instrumental style with focus on an innovative sound, and his releases spanned genres and styles ranging from blues rock, hard rock, jazz fusion and a blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Beck was ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone and other magazines' rankings of the greatest guitarists. He was born Geoffrey Arnold Beck on June 24, 1944 in Wallington, Surrey, England.

Lisa Marie Presley dies at age 54 after suffering cardiac arrest at her home in Calabasas, California. Shw was a singer-songwriter. She was the only child of singer and actor Elvis Presley (who died in 1977) and actress Priscilla Presley (who survives her), as well as the sole heir to her father's estate. Lisa Marie Presley developed a career in the music business and issued three albums: To Whom It May Concern in 2003, Now What in 2005, and Storm & Grace in 2012, and had a hit single "Lights Out" in 2003. Her first album reached Gold certification with the Recording Industry Association of America. Presley also released non-album singles, including duets with her father using tracks he had released before he died. Lisa Marie Presley was born on February 1, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Lisa Loring dies at age 64 in Burbank, California. A Chinese balloon, suspected by the U.S. of being a spy balloon, is shot down six miles off the coast of South Carolina near Surfside Beach by a missile fired from a U.S. fighter jet. The plane was flying at about 58,000 feet at the time of the missile firing, while the balloon was at or above 60,000 feet. The balloon had been observed drifting over the U.S. over the past few days, beginning over Alaska and then being observed over Montana, then over Kansas and Missouri, then over North Carolina.

At least 50,000 people are killed in an earthquake in southern Turkey and northern Syria, which strikes with a magnitude of 7.8. Burt Bacharach dies at age 94 in Los Angeles, California. He was an American composer, songwriter, record producer, and pianist who is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures of 20th-century popular music. He composed hundreds of pop songs from the late 1950s, many in collaboration with lyricist Hal David. He won three Academy Awards, six Grammy Awards, and an Emmy Award. From 1961 to 1972, most of Bacharach and David's hits were written specifically for and performed by Dionne Warwick, but earlier associations (from 1957 to 1963) saw the composing duo work with Marty Robbins, Perry Como, Gene McDaniels, and Jerry Butler. Following the initial success of these collaborations, Bacharach wrote hits for Gene Pitney, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, Jackie DeShannon, Bobbie Gentry, Tom Jones, Herb Alpert, B. J. A small medical transport plane crashes in Stagecoach, Nevada, during snow and strong winds, killing all five people aboard, including a patient.

A massive storm hits California, with several feet of new snow in the Sierra Nevada, and strong winds and heavy rains in some other portions of the state. Federal and California state regulators close Silicon Valley Bank, the 16th-largest bank in the U.S., over concerns for its solvency. The bank falls into receivership, taken over by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation), which will re-open it beginning Monday, March 13, to allow depositors to withdraw funds.

Six road construction workers are killed when a passenger vehicle plows into them on the northbound Baltimore Beltway (I-695) north of Security Boulevard. One vehicle attempts to change lanes, clipping another vehicle which then loses control and goes between the lines of jersey bariers of the contruction zone, killing the six workers and then flipping over. The driver of the vehicle survives with injuries.

Nine U.S. Army soldiers are killed when their two HH-60 Black Hawk assault helicopters crash after colliding in mid-air over Trigg County, Kentucky, near the Kentucky-Tennessee border. Five of the nine soldiers were aboard one of the helicopters while the other four soldiers were on the other.

A tanker truck carrying a load of gasoline catches fire and explodes under an overpass in Philadephia, PA, causing a bridge carrying the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 to collapse, and the southbound bridge to be damaged. Sixteen people are injured in central Baltimore when a mass-transit bus collides with two cars and then crashes into an apartment building. Eyewitnesses say that one of the cars was speeding and ran through a red light before hitting the bus at North Paca Street and West Mulberry Street, causing the bus to go off-course. The bus continued onward, striking a second car and then crashed into an apartment building in the 500 block of West Franklin Street.

All six people on board a Cessna business jet are killed when it crashes near French Valley Airport in Murrieta, California, its intended destination. The plane had taken off from Las Vegas, Nevada, and crashes at about 4:15 AM local time, causing a brush fire that grows to an acre in size before being extinguished. The crash site is about 65 miles north of San Diego, California.

Brooks Robinson dies at age 86. He was a third baseman who played his entire major-league career with the Orioles, playing in all or part of 23 major-league seasons from 1955 to 1977. Generally considered to be the best-fielding third baseman in major-league history, he won 16 Gold Glove awards for fielding excellence, and was chosen for the American League All-Star team 18 times. He was chosen the American League's Most Valuable Player for the 1964 season. He played in four World Series, including the 1970 World Series for which he was named Most Valuable Player. In that World Series, he played every inning of all five games, batted .429 (9-for-21) with 2 doubles, 2 homers, six runs batted in and five runs scored, and made several spectacular fielding plays. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983, becoming the first third-baseman ever to be elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. His nicknames were "Mr. Oriole" and "The Human Vacuum Cleaner." He was born Brooks Calbert Robinson Jr. on May 18, 1937 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
