In 2022, the total number of hours watched on video-streaming services in the U.S. surpasses, for the first time, the total number of hours watched on cable TV, satellite TV, and conventional (broadcast) TV combined.

Larry Biittner dies at age 75 in his birth town of Pocahontas, Iowa. He was a baseball outfielder and first baseman who played 14 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for the Washington Senators / Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, and Cincinnati Reds from 1970 to 1983.  He was born Lawrence David Biittner on July 27, 1946.

The Baltimore and Washington metro areas get snow, beginning as light rain. Many public schools in the Baltimore and Washington areas are closed. Snowfall in the Baltimore area ranges from nearly 12 inches in southern Anne Arundel County to a trace (or perhaps none) in the extreme northern sections. Some snowfall totals in the Baltimore area are: 3 to 5 inches in Baltimore (city); 5 inches in Catonsville, a half inch to one inch in Westminster; 2 to 3 inches in Perry Hall and Nottingham; 1.5 inches in Bel Air; 6.8 inches at BWI Airport (a new record for any January 3rd at that site); 7 to 8 inches in Annapolis.

Snow and ice on Interstate 95 between Richmond (VA) and Washington (DC) cause accidents that strand hundreds of motorists for many hours.

Sidney Poitier dies at age 94 in Los Angeles, California. He was a Bahamian-American actor, film director, activist, and ambassador. In 1964, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, becoming the first black man to win the award.  He received two Academy Award nominations, ten Golden Globes nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, six BAFTA nominations, eight Laurel nominations, and one Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination. From 1997 to 2007, he was the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan. He was born on February 20, 1927 in Miami, Florida.

Marilyn Bergman dies at age 93. She and her husband Alan Bergman (married from 1958 until Marilyn's death) were a songwriting duo. Among their best-known songs are "The Way We Were" and "The Windmills of Your Mind " (the latter for which they wrote English lyrics to music by French composer Michel Legrand). She was born Marilyn Keith on November 10, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, NY.

At least 17 people, including 9 children, are killed in a fire in a 19-floor apartment building in the Bronx, New York, NY.

Bob Saget dies at age 65 of head injuries suffered in an accidental fall at the hotel where he was staying near Orlando, Florida.  He was a stand-up comedian, actor, and television host. His acting roles included Danny Tanner on the ABC sitcom Full House (1987–1995), its Netflix sequel Fuller House (2016–2020), and the voice of narrator Ted Mosby on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014). From 1989 to 1997, he was the original host of America's Funniest Home Videos. He was born Robert Lane Saget on May 17, 1956 in Philadelphia, PA.

Dwayne Hickman dies at age 87 in Los Angeles, California. He was an actor and television executive, producer and director, who worked as an executive at CBS and also briefly recorded as a vocalist. Hickman portrayed Chuck MacDonald, Bob Collins' girl-crazy teenaged nephew, in the 1950s TV sitcom The Bob Cummings Show (first-run episodes from 1955 to 1959) and the title character in the 1960s sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (first-run episodes from 1959 to 1963). He was the younger brother of actor Darryl Hickman, with whom he had appeared on screen. In retirement, he devoted his time to painting. He was born on May 18, 1934, also in Los Angeles, CA.

Ronnie Spector dies at age 78 of cancer. She was a singer who formed the girl group the Ronettes in 1957 with her elder sister Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. Bennett fronted the group while record producer Phil Spector produced the majority of their output. She and Phil Spector got married in 1968 and separated in 1972. She sang lead on the Ronettes' string of hits in the early-to-mid–1960s, including "Be My Baby" (1963), "Baby, I Love You" (1963), "The Best Part of Breakin' Up" (1964), and "Walking in the Rain" (1964). In 1964, she launched a solo career with the single "So Young". After 1980, she released five studio albums. In 1986, she experienced a career resurgence when she was featured on Eddie Money's song "Take Me Home Tonight". She was born Veronica Yvette Bennett on August 10, 1943 in Manhattan, New York, NY.

An underwater volcano erupts suddenly and violently off the coast of the island nation of Tonga. Tsunami waves up to 12 feet high cause great damage in parts of Tonga, destroying villages. All of the homes on one of Tonga's islands are destroyed, killing at least three people. Tsunami waves also hit parts of Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and the U.S. and Canadian Pacific coast including Alaska, although tsunami waves in places other than Tonga are 4 feet or less.

Meat Loaf dies at age 74 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was a rock, hard rock, and heavy-metal singer and actor. He was noted for his powerful, wide-ranging voice and theatrical live shows. His Bat Out of Hell trilogy—Bat Out of Hell, Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell, and Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose—has sold more than 65 million albums worldwide. More than four decades after its release, the first album still sells an estimated 200,000 copies annually and stayed on the charts for over nine years, making it one of the best-selling albums in history. Meat Loaf was born Marvin Lee Aday (he later changed his first name to Michael) on September 27, 1947 in Dallas, Texas.

Nicholas "Nick" Stratton (original last name: Strelka) dies at age 96 in Nottingham, Maryland. He begins working for the U.S. Post Office in Weirton, West Virginia, as a 16-year-old, delivering mail to residents and businesses in a ten-block area twice daily. He also works for a few months at the Weirton Steel mill as a forklift operator.  He enlists in the U.S. Army Air Forces toward the end of World War II, receiving pilot training in Greenville, Mississippi, and also served in Harlingen, Texas. After serving for more than a year in the Army entirely in the U.S. and attaining the rank of corporal, he is honorably discharged in November 8, 1945, then begins attending Denison University in Granville, Ohio, on the G.I. Bill (which pays his tuition), graduating from Denison in May 1949, earning a B.A. degree in economics. In the summer of 1948 he also attends classes at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He marries Dorothy Lentz in August 1949, a native of Newark, Ohio, where she had worked as a secretary at the headquarters of Moore's, a regional chain of discount stores. They move to Chicago and Nick works in claims for Kemper Life Insurance Company and also in the manufacutring plant of Advance Transformer Company, while Dorothy works as a secretary for a couple of companies. They then move to Detroit and then to Plymouth, Michigan, and Nick works as a salesperson for Beacon Falls Rubber Footwear and then as a field representative for the U.S. Social Security Administration, while Dorothy works as a secretary for Nash-Kelvinator and then for The Flintkote Company. Dorothy quits her Flintkote job in 1956 while pregnant with Nick's and her first child, a boy. She and Nick have a second child, a girl, in 1958. While living in Plymouth, Nick hosts a weekly 5-minute radio show, "Your Social Security", on WPAG Radio in nearby Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1958 and early 1959. On the show, he answers questions about Social Security from listeners. Nick earns a promotion which necessitates transferring to the Baltimore area, headquarters of the U.S. Social Security Administration. He and his family move to Baltimore, Maryland, in May 1959 and then to the Westview Park neighborhood in Catonsville, Maryland, in May 1960. Nick continues working at Social Security headquarters, rising to become a management analyst before retiring at the end of 1989. After raising their children, he and his wife take several overseas trips beginning in the 1980s, including to England, Ireland, France, and Russia.  Nick's retirement includes attending the University of Maryland Baltimore County for free as a senior, learning about history, foreign languaes, and other things.  He and his wife moved to their daughter's house in Nottingham, Maryland, in 2016. His wife died at age 90 on April 9, 2018. He was born on May 22, 1926, in Weirton, West Vieginia.
