Former Facebook data scientist Frances Haugen testifies before a U.S. Senate subcommittee (Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security) about the harm she says Facebook and its Instagram app are doing to children, especially to young girls. Haugen has leaked one Facebook study that found that 13.5 percent of teen girls say their suicidal thoughts became more frequent and that 17% of teen girls say their eating disorders got worse after using Instagram. About 32% of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, and that Instagram made them feel worse, Facebook's researchers found. She says, "It is clear that Facebook prioritizes profit over the well-being of children and all users." She also tells the subcommittee, "Facebook chooses to mislead and misdirect. Facebook has not earned our blind faith."  Facebook executive Monika Bickert says outside the hearing that the company does not place profits over safety, citing the social network's halting of political ads before the November presidential election. Lena Pietsch, a Facebook spokeswoman, says that Haugen never attended an executive-level meeting at Facebook and testified about many subjects that were outside of her expertise.
