As 2021 begins, it's clear and 37 degrees F at Baltimore's National Weather Service station at BWI Airport. The wind is from the north at 3 miles an hour.

In an 81-13 vote, the U.S. Senate overrides U. S. President Donald Trump's veto of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021. This is the first successful veto override of the Trump presidency.

In Tribistovo in Bosnia & Herzogovina, eight people die from carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator being used to power a heater.

It's the beginning of the following International Years as proclaimed by the United Nations: International Year of Peace and Trust; International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development; International Year of Fruits and Vegetables; and International Year for the Elimination of Child Labor.

The 117th United States Congress begins. Nancy Pelosi is re-elected as Speaker of the House with a narrow seven-vote majority (216–209).

The Washington Post releases the recording of a telephone conversation where U. S. President Donald Trump calls Brad Raffensperger to pressure the Georgia Secretary of State to "find 11,780 votes" in his favor.

Rescue workers find the bodies of three people who went missing during a landslide in Gjerdrum, Viken, Norway, on December 30, bringing the death toll to seven. Three people are still missing.

At least 18 people are killed during a funeral in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, when the roof they were sheltering under during heavy rainfall collapses. Police dispatch rescue workers and sniffer dogs, and they say that the rescue operation has been completed.

The Ravens defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 38-3 at Paul Brown Stdium in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Ravens end the regular season with 11 wins and 5 losses, and go on to the playoffs.

U. S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla blocks the Trump administration from imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court.

U.S. Representatives Ted Lieu and Kathleen Rice urge FBI Director Christopher Wray to open a criminal investigation into President Donald Trump's phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for violating state and federal laws. Additionally, Fulton County (Georgia) District Attorney Fani Willis announces that her office is ready to investigate Trump after his call with Raffensperger.

The U. S. state of Georgia holds two runoff elections for both of its seats in the U. S. Senate.  In the special runoff election, Democrat Raphael Warnock defeats Republican Kelly Loeffler. In the regular runoff election, Democrat Jon Ossoff defeats Republican David Perdue. These two wins by Democrats in Georgia give the Democats a 50-50 split of the U. S. Senate with the Republicans. In the event of tie votes by the Senate, U.S. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, a Democrat, will be able to cast the deciding vote.

In college football, University of Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith wins the Heisman Trophy, making him the first receiver to do so since Desmond Howard in 1991.

Team USA defeats Team Canada  2–0 in the Gold Medal Game to win the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, while Team Finland defeats Team Russia 4–1 in the Bronze Medal Game. Team USA's Trevor Zegras is named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Jan. 6, 2021

A joint session of the U. S. Congress begins the process of certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election by certifying the number of Electoral College votes for each candidate by state.  Senators and/or representatives of several states, including Arizona, question whether the results in their respective states are true (that Joe Biden won in their state over Donald Trump).  While the Arizona delegation are speaking their arguments, the proceedings are interrupted by people storming the Capitol (see below).

Hundreds of pro-Donald Trump protesters, some armed, storm the United States Capitol, causing it to be evacuated. Washington, D. C. mayor Muriel Bowser proclaims a citywide nighttime curfew. Shots are fired, and at least six people are injured. A female Trump supporter dies from gunshot wounds, according to police. Multiple members of Congress call this an attempted coup d'etat. The FBI, police, and National Guard  from Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. itself are deployed to stop the riot. Smoke bombs and pepper spray are also used. Multiple suspected pipe bombs are reported, including at the Republican Party headquarters.

The United States Senate chamber and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office are also breached by pro-Trump protesters. President-elect Joe Biden says "It's not a protest, it's an insurrection" and calls on President Donald Trump to "demand an end to this siege" by his followers. In response, President Trump releases a video saying, "I know your pain. I know your hurt. But you have to go home now."

At least seven Democratic members of the U. S. Congress call for Trump's immediate resignation or impeachment or removal by Congress, when it can reconvene, for insurreection against the United States.

The United States Capitol Police state that the Capitol is secured by 6 pm. The Electoral College certificates are also secured.

Three more people die during the United States Capitol riots during "separate medical emergencies", bringing the total death toll to four.

In the evening, Congress reconvenes to resume certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election.  Members of Congress from several states decide to drop their challenges to the election results in the wake of the uprising at the Capitol earlier. Still, the certification of the electoral college votes goes on past midnight.

Stephanie Grisham resigns as the Chief of Staff to the First Lady as a result of the riots. Matt Pottinger resigns as deputy national security adviser; Mick Mulvaney, former chief of staff, resigns from his remaining duties as special envoy to Northern Ireland, and Anna Cristina Niceta resigns as White House social secretary.

Twitter locks the personal account of President Donald Trump for the first time, citing the president's "incitement to violence", and "false claims about the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election". The social media site warns that further attempts to violate the company's rules could result in a permanent suspension of Trump's account.

Facebook locks President Trump's account for 24 hours in response to the violence in Washington, D.C. In a blog post, the social media site says today's events are an "emergency" for the platform, and will be rolling out new rules in response.

Jan. 7, 2021 Early in the morning, the U. S. Congress finishes certifying the results of the 2020 U. S. presidential election. The electoral-college votes remain unchanged from the results going into the session. Congress certifies that Joe Biden wins the presidency over Donald Trump, 306 electoral votes to 232.

A United States Capitol Police officer injured in yesterday's riot in Washington, D.C., is revealed to be on life support as a result of the events. After being erroneously reported as having died earlier, he is  finally reported as deceased by the Capitol Police, who identify him as Brian D. Sicknick.

Michael C. Stenger and Paul D. Irving, the respective Sergeants at Arms of the U. S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, resign upon the requests of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

United States Capitol Police chief Steven Sund announces that he will resign because of the attack on the U. S. Capitol.

Elon Musk overtakes Jeff Bezos by just over $4 billion to become the richest person in the world.

The cryptocurrencies market capitalization reaches $1 trillion for the first time.

Boeing agrees to pay $2.5 billion to settle criminal charges claiming that it covered up design flaws in its Boeing 737 MAX passenger planes from safety officials. The U. S. Department of Justice says that the firm chose "profit over candor."

Faceboook announces that it has extended the lock of Donald Trump's official account for at least the remainder of his term due to the heightened risk of political violence. Snapchat also bans Trump from posting on the app until further notice.

The World Organization for Animal Health confirms that Senegal has reported an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu at a poultry farm in Thies.

The total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the U.S. on this day is 307,552 which is a new one-day record and is apparently the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. (during 2021) in terms of the number of cases in a day.

The man who was photographed sitting at U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's desk during the storming of the U.S. Capitol is arrested in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The U.S. Department of Justice indicts 15 people involved in the assault on the U.S. Capitol, and officials of the department say they expect that more people will be charged.

U.S. President Donald Trump announces that he will not attend the inauguration of his successor, Joe Biden.  Mr. Trump will be the first U.S. president not to attend the inauguration of his successor since Andrew Johnson in 1869.

Outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets with incoming Secretary of State Antony Blinken for the first time to help ensure an orderly transition of power.

Former U.S. Senator David Perdue of Georgia, a Republican, concedes to his Demcratic challenger Jon Ossoff, formally guaranteeing the Democrats a majority in the U.S. Senate.

Twitter permanently suspends Donald Trump's account. Twitter says it did so to end "the risk of further incitement of violence."

Twitter also suspends the accounts of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, American attorney Sidney Powell, and former 8kun administrator Ron Watkins for spreading content related to the QAnon conspiracy theory.

Three people are killed and four others are injured in a shooting spree through several neighborhoods in the South Side area of Chicago, Illinois, as well as Evanston. The shooter, a 32-year-old man, is shot during a shootout with responding Evanston police officers and later dies in a hospital.

In NFL football, the Buffalo Bills win a playoff game for the first time since the 1995 season. They defeat the Indianapolis Colts, 27-24.

The United States Attorney for the Distirct of Columbia announces that Jacob Chansley (also known as Jake Angeli or "QAnon Shaman"), who was photographed wearing horns during the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, has been arrested. Additionally, Adam Christian Johnson is also expected to face charges for carrying U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's lectern during the occupation of the Capitol Building.

West Virginia delegate Derrick Evans resigns a day after being arrested for illegally entering the U.S. Capitol (on January 6).

A passenger jetliner, Sriwijaya Air Flight 182, crashes into the Java Sea off the Thousand Islands, Indonesia, five minutes after departing an airport in Jakarta. All 62 people on board are killed.

A winter storm named Filomena in Spain causes two deaths in the province of Malaga from heavy rains, and another two deaths from hypothermia in central Spain as a blizzard hits the area. The mayor of Madrid, Spain, requests the assistance of the Army to help his city in a situation he calls of "extreme gravity".

A nationwide power blackout in Pakistan leaves more than 200 million people without power. Electricity is restored to some parts of the country by the end of the day.

Ten newborn babies die in a hospital fire in Maharashtra, India.

Apple Inc. suspends indefinitely the app Parler from the App Store. Parler is a microblogging and social-networking service with significant use by Donald Trump supporters, conservatives, and conspiracy theorists.

Amazon Web Services announces that it will discontinue providing cloud computing services to Parler as of 11:59 PM Pacific time January 10.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announces that detachments of the Virginia National Guard and State Police will continue to be stationed at the U.S. Capitol through January 20, the day of inauguation of Joe Biden as the next U.S. president.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announces that the United States will be lifting all restrictions on contacts between American and Taiwanese officials.

In the NFL postseason's first round (wild card playoffs), the Baltimore Ravens defeat the Tennessee Titans at Nashville, 20 to 13. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is the leading rusher of the game with 136 yards and a touchdown.

Democrats in the U. S. House of Representatives introduce an article of impeachment against U. S. President Donald Trump for "incitement of insurrection".

U.S. President Donald Trump approves an emergency declaration request by District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser ahead of Joe Biden's inauguration.

Chad Wolf resigns as Acting United States Secretary of Homeland Security, citing "recent events, including the ongoing and meritless court rulings regarding the validity of my authority as Acting Secretary". He is replaced by FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor.

The New York State Bar Association announces that it has launched an inquiry into removing President Donald Trump's attorney Rudy Guiliani from its membership over his role in the "violent uprising" at the Capitol building.

Michigan announces it will ban open-carry guns at the state capitol.

Three police officers are killed, two by gunfire and one in a hit-and-run, after a carjacking in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. A fourth police officer is also injured. This is the first time in Puerto Rico's recent history in which multiple police officers were killed in one incident. The suspect remains at large.

Facebook bans "Stop the Steal" content ahead of Joe Biden's inauguration.

The Parler social networking service goes offline after Amazon Web Services discontinues providing it cloud computing services, in the wake of the January 6 storming of the U. S. Capitol. Parler's chief executive says that the service will be down "longer than expected" as "most people with enough servers to host us have shut their doors to us."

U.S. President Donald Trump warns that successfully impeaching him for his conduct regarding the storming of the Capitol (on January 6) would represent a "tremendous danger" to the nation, but he does not elaborate.

U.S. President Donald Trump visits Alamo. Texas, and gives a speech at the wall separating the U.S. from Mexico.

U.S. Vice Presisent Mike Pence tells U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that he will not invoke the 25th Amendment (regarding presidential succession).

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence acknowledges that the Donald Trump presidency is coming to an end. He says that the Trump administration is working with President-elect Joe Biden's transition team.

The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff condemn the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol and acknowledge that Joe Biden will be the next U.S. President.

The United States reports a record-high 4,197 daily deaths from COVID-19 or its complications.

A barge sinks in the Congo River in Democratic Republic of the Congo, killing at least 6 people while 19 others are missing.

Eight people die in an apartment building fire in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The preliminary cause of death is carbon monoxide poisoning.

The U.S. House of Representatives impeaches U.S. President Donald Trump for "incitement of insurection."

After his impeachment, U.S. President Donald Trump releases a video statement condemning the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

The U.S. reports more than a million COVID-19 cases in just four days, surpassing 23 million cases in total.

American Olympic gold-medal swimmer Klete Keller is charged with participating in the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol.

The U.S. federal goverment executes Lisa Marie Montgomery for a murder she committed in 2004. She is the first woman executed by the U.S. federal goverment since June 19, 1953, when Ethel Rosenberg and her husband Julius Rosenberg were executed for conspiring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviets.

YouTube announces that it will suspend U.S. President Donald Trump's account from uploading new videos and live-streaming new content for at least the next 7 days, saying that the channel has violated YouTube's rules regarding incitement to violence.

Israel carries out a wave of airstrikes in eastern Syria nears its border with Iraq. It's reported that 57 people are killed and 28 others wounded in at least 18 Israeli airstrikes, and that several Iranian arms depots are hit. The airstrikes are carried out with the aid of U.S. intelligence information.

Rioting erupts overnight in the Belgian capital Brussels following the death of a 23-year-old Black man in police custody, who was reportedly arrested for violating local COVID-19 restrictions. A police station is set on fire in the north of the city, and King Philippe's vehicle is attacked while traveling through the area.

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden unveils a $1.9-trillion COVID-19 relief package. If passed in Congress, it will include stimulus payments of $2000 (or less) to most Americans, up from $600. The plan to increase the payments to $2000 was endorsed by Joe Biden, Democrats, and outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump.

A roadside bomb in Algeria kills five civilians and injures three others. It is the deadliest attack on citizens of Algeria in recent years.

In the National Football League's AFC playoffs, the Baltimore Ravens lose to the Buffalo Bills at Buffalo, 17 to 3. The game is tied 3-3 at the half, but the Bills score two touchdowns in the third quarter, eliminating the Ravens from the playoffs.

Phil Spector dies at age 81 of COVID-19 complications in French Camp, California. He was a record producer of pop, rock, and R & B music, especially in the 1960s through the 1970s. He was also a musician and songwriter. His signature "wall of sound" was heard on many 1960s hit songs he produced for The Crystals, The Ronettes, Darlene Love, and others. He also produced songs by The Teddy Bears, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, The Beatles, The Wrecking Crew, and others. In 2009, he was convicted for the 2003 murder of actress Lana Clarkson, and sentenced to 19 years to life in prison. He died while in prison. Phil Spector was born on December 26, 1939 in the Bronx, New York, NY.

Clashes between different ethnic groups in Darfur, Sudan, kill at least 83 people. The clashes started after a man was stabbed to death.

More bodies are found under debris in Sulawesi, Indonesia, after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the island two days ago, bringing the death toll to 78.

A helicopter of the Philippine Air Force crashes in the Philippines, killing all 7 people on board.

Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. becomes the 46th President of the United States at about 12:00 noon Eastern time, succeeding Donald John Trump. Kamala Devi Harris becomes the new Vice President, succeeding Mike Pence. Kamala Harris is the first woman, first African American, and first Asian American to be Vice President. Donald Trump leaves the White House and Washington in the early morning for Florida, and does not attend the inauguration.

U.S. President Joe Biden signs an executive order requiring usage of face masks in airports and on airplanes, trains and buses.

Mexico reports a record 22,339 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1,809 COVID-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours.

A suicide attack at an open market in Baghdad, Iraaq, kills at least 32 people and injures 110 others. Such attacks have been rare in Iraq since 2017.

A U.S. convoy consisting of 40 trucks and armored vehicles enters northeastern Syria from Iraq via the Al-Waleed crossing.

Eight workers are killed when a truck carrying sticks of gelatin explosives, explodes at a boulder-crushing facility in Abbalagere in Shivamogga district, Karnataka, India.

The Central African Republic government declares a 15-day state of emergency after rebels attempt to surround and blockade the capital Bangui. Pro-François Bozizé loyalists and anti-balaka militias now control around two-thirds of the war-torn nation.

Fifteen people are killed and eleven others injured in a fire at a nursing home in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issues an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Johnson & Johnson (J & J) COVID-19 vaccine in persons aged 16 years and older for prevention of COVID-19. This vaccine joins those made by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech as the first three COVID-19 vaccines to be distributed in the U.S. Unlike the other two vaccines, the J & J vaccine requires only one vaccination (dose) to achieve full effectiveness instead of two doses spaced a couple of weeks apart, and it does not need to be stored at subzero temperatures.

President Joe Biden addresses the nation on TV in the evening. He sets July 4th as the target date for having small family gatherings with minimal threat of spreading COVID-19. He projects that all American adults will have COVID-19 vaccine available for them by May 1, although not everyone will get vaccinated by that date. He annnounces that the White House will make more shots available at pharmacies and federally-run mass vaccination centers. He also vows to increase the number of vaccinators, increasing the eligible pool of vaccinators to include veterinarians, dentists, paramedics, medical students, and others. In his speech, President Biden also denounces "vicious hate crimes against Asian Americans, who've been attacked, harassed, blamed, and scapegoated."

A gunman shoots and kills a total of eight people at three separate massage spas in Georgia --  two establishments in Atlanta and one in near Acworth. Lava begins flowing from a volcano in Iceland within a few miles of the capital city of Reykjavik, but it is not considered a threat to the city nor any other populated areas. It is the first time this volcano has erupted in about 6,000 years.

He states that he will double his initial goal for COVID-19 vaccinations, to 200 million inoculations in his first 100 days in office. He also states that Homeland Security is working to open or expand some centers in Texas and Arizona to house illegal immigrant children who cross the southern border into the U.S. unaccompanied. He states that the majority of people seeking to illegally enter the U.S. are turned away, but that unaccompanied children are not. Also, President Biden says that he expects to run again for President in 2024 and that he expects Kamala Harris to again be his running mate.

In Pelham, Alabama, a large tornado kills three people and damages or destroys dozens of homes. A total of five people are killed in Alabama and one in Mississippi by storms. A tornado also hits Newnan, Georgia, causing major damage and destruction. Strong thunderstorms also hit parts of Georgia and the Carolinas.

Beverly Cleary dies at age 104 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. She was an American writer of children's and young adult fiction. One of America's most successful authors, 91 million copies of her books have been sold worldwide since her first book was published in 1950. Her books include such fictional characters as Beatrice "Beezus" Quimby, her younger sister Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Henry's dog Ribsy. Beverly Cleary was born on April 12, 1916 in McMinnville, Oregon.

Larry McMurtry dies at age 84 in Archer City, Texas, the city of his birth. He was an American novelist, essayist, bookseller, and screenwriter whose work was predominantly set in either the Old West or in contemporary Texas. His novels include "Lonesome Dove", "The Last Picture Show", and "Terms of Endearment." Several of his novels were made into movies. He also co-wrote the screenplay for the movie "Brokeback Mountain." He was born on June 3, 1936.

A 27-year-old gunman kills two people and injures one at a Royal Farms convenience store in Essex, Md., and also shoots and kills both of his parents in Baldwin, Md. Then he sets his apartment on fire and apparently kills himself in a parking lot with a gunshot.

In Major League Baseball, the Baltimore Orioles defeat the Boston Red Sox, 3-0, in Boston in the season-opening game for both teams. John Means of the Orioles pitches 7 innings of 1-hit ball, allowing just a single to lead off the game. Boston gets only two base hits while the Orioles get nine hits.  For the Orioles, Ryan Mountcastle hits a 2-run double and Anthony Santander hits an RBI single.

A train derailment in Taiwan kills at least 51 people and injures dozens more. The collision and derailment occur when the parking brake is not set on a construction truck, allowing the truck to roll downhill and onto the train track. The train stopped while partially inside a tunnel, and some survivors had to walk on the roofs of the train cars to escape.

In Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, a 20-year-old biracial African-American man Duante Wright, is shot and killed by a police officer after he resists arrest and re-enters his vehicle during a traffic stop. The shooting appears to have been accidental; according to Brooklyn Center police, the officer grabbed her handgun instead of the intended Taser, and then fired the gun, thinking it was a Taser. The incident happened about ten miles from where the Derek Chauvin trial is taking place. (The shooting sparks protests and demonstrations in Brooklyn Center and in nearby Minneapolis and St. Paul.)

Michael Collins dies at age 90 in Naples, Florida. He was an astronaut on the Apollo 11 Moon mission who orbited the Moon in the Command Module while two other astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, descended to the Moon on July 20, 1969 in a vehicle called the Lunar Excusion Module, then became the first two people to walk on the Moon, then blasted off from the Moon to meet and dock with the Command Module for the return trip back to Earth. He earlier flew on the Gemini 10 flight, July 18-21, 1966, on which he spacewalked over to another space vehicle that his vehicle had docked with, making him the first person to visit another space vehicle while in flight. After Apollo 11, he left NASA and served as the U.S.'s 12th Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, in 1970-1971. He was born on October 31, 1930, in Rome, Italy, to American parents.

She says "Today is a good day, Baltimore" and says that the U.S. is starting to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, but that health and economic challenges remain.

Olympia Dukakis dies at age 89 in New York, New York. She was a Greek-American actress, director, producer, teacher, and activist. Not long after her arrival in New York City, she won an Obie Award  for Best Actress in 1963 for her Off-Broadway performance in Bertolt Brecht's Man Equals Man. She later moved to film acting and won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, among other accolades, for her performance in Moonstruck (1987). She received another Golden Globe nomination for Sinatra (1992) and Emmy Award nominations for Lucky Day (1991), More Tales of the City (1998), and Joan of Arc (1999). A hospital fire in India kills at least 18 people. They were patients being treated for COVID-19.

The Unser family has won the Indianapolis 500 auto race a record nine times. John Means of the Orioles pitches a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners at Seattle. The Orioles win, 6 to 0. The only batter for the Mariners to reach base, reached first base on a swinging strike three that was also a wild pitch by John Means, getting past the catcher. This runner was then called out when attempting to steal second base. John Means faced the minimum 27 batters to get 27 outs. This is the first 9-inning non-perfect no-hitter in MLB history in which the pitcher(s) of the no-hitter faced the minimum 27 batters. In Windsor Mill/Woodlawn, a shooter outside a burning townhouse shoots and kills three people and wounds another before police shoot and kill the shooter. The townhouse fire, which also includes an explosion, is on the same property where the shootings take place. Two other townhouses adjoining it suffer major damage, with the original burning one and a neighboring one collapsing. Neighbors who lived in the neighborhood with the shooter for more than a decade described his behavior as erratic and that he believed that the U.S. government and his neighbors were spying on him and out to get him.

In a house in Maryland City just east of Laurel, a man shoots two adults dead and injures a young child before killing himself.

An increasing number of gasoline stations in Southeastern and South Central states are running out of gasoline in the wake of the continued shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline system. In a few cities, nearly half the gas stations have no fuel. Panic buying exacerbates the gasoline supply shortage at stations that do continue to have gas.

Norman Lloyd dies at age 106 in Los Angeles, California. He was an actor, producer, and director with a career in entertainment spanning nearly a century. He worked in every major facet of the industry including theater, radio, television, and film, with a career that started in 1923. His last film, Trainwreck, was released in 2015, after Lloyd had attained 100 years of age. He was a regular on the TV drama St. Elsewhere (1982-1988). He was married for 75 years to his wife Peggy, who died at the age of 98 in 2011. Norman Lloyd was born on November 8, 1914 in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Israel and the Hamas militants on the Gaza Strip continue to clash. Hamas launches several dozen rockets. Most are intercepted by Israeli interceptor missiles, although one rocket strikes a house in Israel and kills a person. Israel launches more airstrikes on Gaza. A 13-story building is destroyed, among others.

The Orioles lose again to the Mets in New York, this time 7 to 1.

The Colonial Pipeline, which distributes about half the gasoline and diesel fuel to the Southeastern, South Central and Middle Atlantic states, resumes operations after a ransomware attack shut it down. Pipeline officials say it will take several days to restore full flow through the pipeline system as liquid fuel moves at only about 5 miles per hour through it. Meanwhile many gas stations in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, and elsewhere in the region (including, to a lesser extent, the Baltimore area) run out of gasoline, due to a combination of panic buying and reduced gasoline availability. At stations that do continue to have gas, long lines of vehicles wait to get fuel, although this panic buying is less in Maryland because a greater percentage of gas stations remain open in the state.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that during the past 12 months, the Consumer Price Index for all items rose 4.2 percent before seasonal adjustment. This is the largest 12-month increase in the CPI since a 4.9 percent rise for the period ending September 2008. Disruptions over the past 12 months caused by the COVID-19 pandemic result in shortages of some raw materiela, parts, and finished products; this scarcity in turn results in increased rises in certain prices.

The larger-than-expected rise in the Consumer Price Index sends U.S. stock prices sharply lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average falls 681.50 points or 1.99 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index falls 89.06 points or 2.14 percent. The NASDAQ Composite index falls 357.75 points or 2.67 percent.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 12 to 15.

U.S. President Joe Biden signs an executive order to strengthen cybersecurity in the U.S.

U.S. Senate Republicans oust Senator Liz Cheney from leadership after she rebuked former U.S. President Donald Trump's false claim that the election was stolen from him. After the ousting, Senator Cheney says that she "will do everything I can to ensure the former president never gets anywhere near the Oval Office."

Israel and Hamas continue intense clashes. At least 60 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza and several Israelis have also been killed since clashes escalated on Monday, May 10.

In the Baltimore area, a relatively small number of gasoline stations temporarily have no fuel due to the effects of the recent Colonial Pipeline shutdown. A customer reports that three gas stations along York Road have no fuel.

Long lines of vehicles continue at gasoline stations that are open in the southeastern U.S., even though fuel is flowing again through the Colonial Piipeline. North Carolina is the hardest-hit state during the fuel-flow outage, with 74 percent of its gas stations being out of fuel. In Virginia, more than half its filling stations have no fuel.

There are news reports that the Colonial Pipeline Company paid the ransomware hackers nearly $5 million to get the hackers to unlock the pipeline company's computers so that it could resume operations. However, the pipeline company itself denies this.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that people who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can now not wear a mask in most situations. Exceptions include sporting events, concerts and the like where crowds of people pay to attend, whether indoors or outdoors. Also, masks must still be worn at doctors' offices, hospitals, prisons, and any business that imposes the mask requirement. Also, the CDC defers to state and local governments who may wish to make their masking rules more restrictive because of local COVID-19 hot spots.

Israel and Hamas continue clashes. Israeli tanks roll into Gaza, and there are more Israeli airstrikes on Gaza as well. Rockets continue to be fired from Gaza toward Israel. At least three rockets are fired toward northern Israel from neighboring Lebanon, but land off the coast. At least 83 Palestinians and 7 Israelis have been killed in this latest conflict that began on Monday, May 10.

It's reported that 88 percent of gasoline stations in Washington, D.C. have no gas in the wake of the temporary shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline system. Even though the pipeline is now operational again, gasoline will take some time (at 5 miles per hour through the pipeline) to fill storage/depot tanks in the area. Although Washington, D.C. is hit hard, the Baltimore area has relatively few stations out of gasoline. For example, on Belair Road in Nottingham and Perry Hall this afternoon it is business as usual at gas stations, with no long lines.

Gasoline in the southeastern U.S. continues to be in short supply, with long lines of vehicles at stations that do have gas, even though the Continental Pipeline system resumed piping gasoline the day before.

The Baltimore area has a sunny morning, partly cloudy midday, partly to mostly cloudy afternoon and evening, all with light winds. After a morning with low temperatures in the upper 30s to middle 40s, the afternoon high temperatures generally get into the middle 70s.

More than a foot of rain in the city of Lake Charles, Louisiana, causes major flooding there. Heavy rain also causes flooding in Baton Rouge, some other parts of Louisiana, and in East Texas. At least four people are killed in the floods.  Western Louisiana receives up to 17 inches of rain in 6 hours.

Tornadoes are reported in Texas: Sterling City, Lamesa, and others. Much hail is also reported at various locations in Texas.

India reports 4329 COVID-19 deaths, a new daily high for the country.

A cyclone (the equivalent of a hurricane, and named Tauktae) in western India kills more than 30 people. It is one of the strongest such storms ever to hit the west coast of India. It makes landfall near Una, Gujarat, India. with sustained winds of 125 mph. Mumbai reports a wind gust of 70 mph, the strongest wind ever reported there.

The Israel-Hamas conflict continues. Since May 10, more than 200 Palestinians and about a dozen Israelis have been killed.

The Baltimore area receives showers and thunderstorms in two batches. The first storms occur in late afternoon and early evening, while the second cluster of storms starts around 8:00 PM. There are some strong winds with these storms; a tree is blown down over Northern Parkway, a house is set on fire by lightning in Darlington (in Harford County), and several thousand customers in Baltimore and vicinity lose electric power.  Rainfall in the Baltimore area from these storms varies greatly from place to place. Gavin MacLeod dies at age 90 in Palm Desert, California. He was an American actor, Christian activist, and author whose career spanned six decades. He also appeared as a guest on several talk, variety, and religious programs. MacLeod's career began in films in 1957. In 1965, he played opposite Peter Mann in The Sword of Ali Baba. B. J. Thomas dies at age 78 in Arlington, Texas. An American singer widely known for his pop, country, and Christian hits of the 1960s into the 1980s, he made popular recordings of "Hooked on a Feeling" (1968), "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" " (1969), and "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" (1975).  He also did well on the country-music singles charts in the 1980s. The Baltimore area receives rain showers in the morning and strong thunderstorms in the late afternoon and early evening. The thunderstorms affect mostly the northern half of the Baltimore region. Quarter-size hail falls in Lochearn, just west of Baltimore. There is also hail reported in Pikesville, Towson, and Parkville, among other places. Several trees are reported to have blown down in northern parts of the region. At least 13,000 customers lose electric power. The thunderstorms "train" in certain areas (one following the other over the same track, like train cars), which enhances the precipitation amounts in these areas. Nottingham receives 0.50 of an inch, but areas a few miles to the north get  an inch or more. However, only 0.03 inches of rain falls at BWI Marshall Airport and 0.17 inches of rain falls in Annapolis. A flash flood warning is issued in the evening for parts of central Baltimore County and parts of Harford County. stretching from Towson to Bel Air and beyond. A tornado warning is issued for northeastern Baltimore County and northwestern Harford County in the late afernoon for an EF 1 tornado that does considerable damage to trees. The tornado causes a tree to fall very close to a house near Jacksonville in Baltimore County. At BWI Marshall Airport, the high temperature is 86 degrees F and the low temperature is 67 degrees F.

The U.S. Justice Department states that it will elevate the level of cyberattacks on American companies and organizations to the same level as dometstic terrorism.

NBC News states that the U.S. has reached 600,000 COVID-19 deaths, but the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center puts the number of deaths at 596,391.

U.S. President Joe Biden signs an executive order banning Americans from investing in nearly a dozen Chinese companies and their subsidiaries, such as China General Nuclear Power Group, either for their ties to the People's Liberation Army or for selling surveillance technology that is used to spy on the country's religious minorities or dissidents. The ban will go into effect on August 2, and current investors have a year to fully divest from these companies.

A large cargo ship, the MV X-Press Pearl, sinks off the coast of Sri Lanka after fire erupted on the ship on May 20. An environmental disaster is feared, as the ship was carrying tiny plastic beads as well as chemicals and oil. Some of the beads as well as pieces of the ship wash ashore on Sri Lankan beaches.

Facebook announces that it will no longer grant blanket immunity to politicians that use its service, especially if their posts are deemed to be deceptive or abusive. The announcement comes as Facebook officially bans former U.S. President Donald Trump from the website until January 2023.

The Nigerian government announces that the government is indefinitely suspending Twitter's operations in the country, claiming that the social media service is being used for "activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence."  The move comes two days after President Muhammadu Buhari was temporarily suspended from Twitter for posting an inflammatory tweet directed at groups believed to be responsible for attacking government buildings in recent weeks.

They begin at about 8:00 in parts of Carroll County and move southeastward. The heaviest rainfall is from downtown Baltimore southward, southeastward and southwestward. Baltimore gets a thunderstorm with heavy rain and very frequent lightning beginning at about 9:40 in the evening. Columbia and some other parts of Howard County get a thunderstorm with heavy rain at about 9:45. At 10:00 in the evening, the Baltimore thunderstorm has moved and is centered over Dundalk, still with heavy rain and very frequent lightning. The Howard County storm begins to move into northern Anne Arundel County at about 10:00. At 10:19 in the evening, BWI Marshall Airport reports a heavy thunderstorm with strong wind with a gust to 40 MPH, and 0.34 inches of rain falls there by 10:27 PM. Another thunderstorm reaches southern Howard County by about 10:30 PM. Heavy rain showers spread over Anne Arundel County generally from northwest to southeast from 10:00 PM until midnight. Precipitation for the day at BWI Marshall Airport is 0.70 of an inch, with light rain continuing there at midnight.  Precipitation in Annapolis is 0.58 of an inch, but light rain is still falling there at midnight. Nottingham gets 0.21 of an inch of rain, on the northern edge of the big Baltimore/Dundalk thunderstorm (but lots of lightning in the southern sky).

The U.S. House of Reresentatives votes 415-14 in favor of making Juneteenth (June 19th) a federal holiday. The measure goes to U.S. President Joe Biden's desk for his signature.

The Israel Defense Forces carry out airstrikes on Khan Yunis and Gaza City in the Gaza Strip in the early morning, in response to incendiary balloons being flown from Gaza, putting the ceasefire in jeopardy. This comes after the Dance of Flags march was held in East Jerusalem.

U.S. President Joe Biden signs into law a bill that makes Juneteenth (June 19th) a federal holiday. The holiday is called Juneteenth National Independence Day, and it commemorates the day in 1865 (in Galveston, Texas), when the last Amercian slaves were freed.  As with all of the other eleven U.S. federal holidays (including Inauguration Day which is once every four years), most U.S. Government workers will have the day off for the holiday. Since June 19th falls on a Saturday in 2021, federal workers get the day off Friday, June 18th. (When June 19th falls on a Sunday, as it will in 2022, the federal holiday will be celebrated the following Monday.)

Juneteenth observances and celebrations occur in many places in the U.S. during the first federally-recognized Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Tropical Storm Claudette strikes the U.S. Gulf Coast, making landfall in southeast Louisiana and heading generally northeastward. Major flooding occurs in some sections of Louisiana and in Gulf Coast parts of Mississippi and Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle.  A tornado spawned by the tropical storm hits Brewton, Alabama, causing destruction or damage to more than a dozen buildings and partially ripping off the gymnasium roof of the high school.

A multiple-vehicle collision involving a van, a car, and a couple of tractor-trailers on Interstate 65 in Butler County, Alabama, kills 9 children and one adult. Eight of the killed children were in the van; the only person in the van who survives is its driver. It's possible that at least one of the vehicles hydroplaned on the road before crashing, as rain was falling in the area. That area of the highway slopes downhill toward a small stream and has had hydroplaning issues in the past.

Maryland reports no new daily COVID-19 deaths on this day. It's the first time in about a year that this has happened.

Starting today, Major League Baseball umpires will check pitchers, their uniforms, other areas of their bodies, and the baseballs pitchers throw for sticky substances, if they suspect the use of such substances. This is in response to batters striking out more often and having a significantly lower aggregate batting average so far this season, thought to be caused by many pitchers putting sticky substances on the baseballs to alter their movement when pitched to the batters. If pitchers are caught with sticky substances, they will be fined and/or suspended for a number of games. If a pitcher is suspended for using sticky substances, he will not be able to be replaced on the team's roster during the suspension.

A condominium building partially collapses in Surfside, Florida, just north of Miami Beach. One person is confirmed killed and as many as 99 more people are missing.

At 3:40 in the afternoon, a 2.6-magnitude earthquake strikes the western Baltimore region. The epicenter is near the Dead Run (stream) side of Lorraine Park Cemetery on Windsor Mill Road just southeast of downtown Gwynn Oak/Woodlawn, less than a half-mile from Woodlawn High School, and it is 1.5 miles deep in the Earth. Nearby residents feel and hear the earthquake and think that something hit their homes. One describes the sound as one like a truck crash. No damage or injuries are reported.

In Surfside, Florida, search-and-rescue efforts continue after the partial collapse of a condominium building early on June 24th. Four people have been confirmed killed, but another 159 people are missing.

A hot-air balloon accident in Albuquerque, New Mexico, kills all 5 people on board. The balloon hits power lines and becomes separated from the gondola, then the gondola falls about 100 feet to the ground, bursting into flames. The balloon deflates and lands on top of a house about a mile away.

Rescue workers continue to work through the rubble of the partially collapsed condominium bulding in Surfside, Florida. There are still 159 people unaccounted for. No new dead bodies are identified, but rescuers find more human remains in the late afternoon that have yet to be identified.

A heat wave in the Pacific Northwest and more generally in the far western continental U.S. results in temperatures rising to record or near-record highs, with Seattle, Washiington, and Portland, Oregon, at or near 100 degrees F.

Floods caused by heavy rains in and around Detroit, Michigan, inundate interstate highways and trap some motorists.

Bruce Springsteen opens his show on Broadway in New York, NY, the first Broadway show to open to the general public in more than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down Broadway shows.

The first cruise ship leaves a U.S. port in more than a year, with cruises having been halted because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It leaves Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at only 40 percent capacity with passengers socially distanced. About 99 percent of the passengers and crew have been fully vacicnated against COVID-19.

A bicycle accicdent at the Tour de France race causes a massive pileup of dozens of bikes and bicyclists. Several are injured and one has to drop out of the race. The accident is caused by a spectator who gets too close to the racing route.

Just before 2:00 in the morning, an earthquake measuring 1.7 on the Richter scale hits western parts of Baltimore. It was centered near Edmondson Village Shopping Center. About 300 people in the immediate area report feeling or hearing it. It is considered an aftershock to a 2.6 earthquake that happened west of Baltimore in Gwynn Oak/Woodlawn two days prior, although this one is centered a couple of miles southeast of the first quake.

Rescuers are still working at the site of the partial condo building collapse in Surfside. Florida. The number of confirmed deaths is now 9, with about 150 people still misisng.

The heat wave in the Pacific Northwest and the Far Western area of the 48 contiguous U.S. states continues. Portland, Oregon, hits at least 112 degrees F, and Seattle, Washington, gets to over 100 degrees F.

The heat wave continues in the Pacific Northwest, with Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, both reaching well over 100 degrees F.

Tropical Storm Danny forms, reaching maximum sustained wind speed of 45 mph, then comes ashore north of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina as a minimal tropical storm (40 mph winds). Heavy rains from Danny cause some minor flooding in the Carolinas and Georgia. There were some fallen trees caused by strong winds or lightning strikes. A total of ten rescues were carried out on two North Carolina beaches because of rip currents.

Donald Rumsfeld dies at age 88 in Taos, New Mexico. He was an American politician who served as U.S. Secretary of Defense from 1975 to 1977 under U.S. President Gerald Ford, and again from January 2001 to December 2006 under U.S. President George W. Bush. He is both the youngest and the second-oldest person to have served as Secretary of Defense. He was born Donald Henry Runsfeld on July 9, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois.

Comedian and actor Bill Cosby is released from prison after a Pennsylvania court judge overturns his conviction, ruling that he was given an unfair trial for alleged sexual offenses.  (He was sentenced on September 25, 2018 to 3 to 10 years in a Pennsylvania state prison for drugging and molesting a woman at home.)

The U.S. House of Representatives votes 222–190 to establish a committee to investigate the January 6 riot at the United States Capitol with Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger being the only two Republicans to vote for the committee.

A grand jury in Manhattan, New York, NY,  indicts the Trump Organization, as well as its CFO Allen Weisselberg.

The heat wave in the Pacific Northwest continues and record-high temperatures are reported in parts of British Columbia, Canada, for example the village of Lytton which records Canada's all-time record hightest temperature of 121 degrees Fehrenheit.  About 100 to 200 people have died in British Columbia because of the heat.
