In Wuhan, China, health officials say that there are now 44 cases of a newly diagnosed respiratory illness linked to a "wet market" food store. They also say that lung damage has occurred in a "small number" of these cases.

In Hong Kong, a newly created "serious response" level is activated in response to fears that Hong Kongers visiting Wuhan, China, may have brought the new respiratory disease back to Hong Kong with them.

U.S. forces at Baghdad's international airport use a drone strike to kill General Qassem Soleimani, Iran's top general. He had been plotting to attack American military and diplomats in Iraq and elsewhere.

A novel coronavirus is identified by Chinese authorities as the cause of a cluster of repiratory-illness cases in Wuhan, China  They temporarily name the virus “2019-nCoV”.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake strikes southwestern Puerto Rico, the largest in a swarm of earthquakes that had begun there on December 28, 2019. This quake kills one person, injures 9 others, and knocks out electricity to all of Puerto Rico. In all, the earthquake swarm includes 11 quakes of magnitude 5.0 or higher.

Fifty-six people are killed and more than 200 are injured in a stampede at the funeral of General Qassem Soleimani in Kerman, Iran.

In New York, NY, jury selection begins in the rape and sexual assult trial of Harvey Weinstein.

Neil Peart dies at age 67 in Santa Monica, California. He was a Canadian musician, songwriter, and author, best known as the drummer and primary lyricist of the rock band Rush. Peart earned numerous awards for his musical performances, including an induction into the Modern Drummer Readers Poll Hall of Fame in 1983, making him the youngest person ever so honored. Known to fans by the nickname 'The Professor', his drumming was renowned for its technical proficiency and his live performances for their exacting nature and stamina. He was born on September 12, 1952 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard shoots down a Ukrainian civilian jetliner (Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752) after erroneously identifying it as a hostile missile, killing all 176 people on board. The dead aboard the Boeing 737 include 82 Iranians and more than 50 Canadians.

South Korea says it has placed a Chinese woman under isolated treatment after it is thought she brought a virus that has sickened several dozen people in China and Hong Kong (later to be named COVID-19).

Buck Henry dies at age 89 in Los Angeles, California. He was an actor, comedian, and filmmaker. Henry's contributions to film included his work as a co-director on Heaven Can Wait (1978) alongside Warren Beatty, and his work as a co-writer for Mike Nichols's The Graduate (1967) and Peter Bogdanovich's What's Up, Doc? (1972). His long career began on television with work on shows with Steve Allen in The New Steve Allen Show (1961). He co-created Get Smart (1965–1970) with Mel Brooks, and hosted Saturday Night Live 10 times from 1976 to 1980. He later guest-starred in such popular shows as Murphy Brown, Hot in Cleveland, Will & Grace, and 30 Rock. He was born Henry Zuckerman on December 9, 1930 in New York, NY.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes southwestern Puerto Rico. It damages many structures, including several historical buildings as well as modern high-rises in the city of Ponce. This earthquake is an aftershok of the 6.4 earthquake that occurred on January 7, and part of a swarm of earthquakes in Puerto Rico beginning on December 28, 2019.

The high temperature in Baltimore reaches 70 F, a tie for the highest temperature ever recorded for Baltimore on any January 12th (up to this point) since recordkeeping began in 1871. By this date, a swarm of earthquakes in Puerto Rico has caused more than 8,000 people to be homeless and camping outdoors in various types of shelters, with 40,000 others camping outside their homes, just in the city of Ponce alone. There are refugees in 28 government-sponsored refugee centers spread over 14 municipalities of southern and central Puerto Rico. Damage to government structures is calculated in the hundreds of millions and financial losses were estimated in $3.1 billion. A power plant that supplied over a quarter of Puerto Rico's energy needs was badly damaged and was shut down, with repairs estimated to take at least a year.

The NBA announces that a player on the Utah Jazz has tested positive for coronavirus/COVID-19. It suspends indefinitely the NBA's games scheduled for Thursday, March 12 onward.

The National Hockey League (NHL) announces that it will suspend its season indefinitely due to the coronavirus/COVID-19 emergency.

George Floyd dies when a Minneapolis (Minnesota) police officer presses his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for about 9 and a half minutes. George Floyd, a Black man, was being restrained by a white police officer while also in handcuffs and complaining that he could not breathe. He had just previously struggled with police officers when they attempted to get him into a police cruiser. Police had arrested him for allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 bill at a nearby store. A bystander uses a smartphone to capture video of the police officer's kneeling on Mr. Floyd. (The release of the video on the internet results in worldwide protests. On April 20, 2021, Derek Chauvin, the white police officer who knelt on George Floyd until he died, is sentenced to second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.)

The police department in San Francisco, CA, announces it will no longer release portrait photos of people they arrest unless the arrested persons pose a threat to the public. They state they are doing this to avoid perpetuating racial stereotypes.

In New York, NY, officials delay the resumption of indoor dining in restaurants because they fear such action could increase the spread of COVID-19.

A New York appeals court okays the release of a book about U.S. President Donald Trump written by Trump's niece Mary Trump. The president's brother Fred Trump Jr. had objected to the release of the book.

Hugh Downs dies at age 99 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was a radio and television broadcaster, announcer and programmer; television host; news anchor; TV producer; author; game show host; talk show sidekick; and music composer. A regular television presence from the mid 1940s until the late 1990s, he had several successful roles on morning, prime-time, and late-night television. For several years he held the certified Guinness World Record for the most hours on commercial network television before being surpassed by Regis Philbin. Downs served as announcer and sidekick for Tonight Starring Jack Paar from 1957 to 1962, co-host of the NBC News program Today from 1962 to 1971, host of the Concentration game show from 1958 to 1969, and anchor of the ABC News magazine 20/20 from 1978 to 1999. He was born on February 14, 1921 in Akron, Ohio.
