James Brady, a celebrity columnist, dies.  Since 1986, he had written the weekly "In Step With" column for Parade magazine in which he interviewed well-known people.  Earlier, he had created the "Page Six" gossip column for the New York Post.  He was born on November 15, 1928.

Ellie Greenwich, a singer and songwriter, dies at age 68 of a heart attack in Manhattan, New York, NY. She wrote or co-wrote  "Be My Baby", "Chapel of Love", and many other hit songs in the 1960s.  She was the lead singer on the hit song "The Kind of Boy You Can't Forget" in 1963 as part of the duo The Raindrops. She was born on October 23, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York, NY.

Jaycee Lee Dugard, kidnapped when she was 11, is reunited with her mother 18 years after her adbuction. (She was kidnapped in Meyers, California, on June 10, 1991, while walking to a school bus stop.)

The Indians beat the Orioles, 5-4, at Oriole Park.  Matt Wieters and Melvin Mora hit home runs for the Orioles, but Cleveland gets two runs in the 9th inning off Jim Johnson, who is the losing pitcher.  Attendance is 13,991.

Aug. 28, 2009 The Orioles win, 13-4, over the Indians at Oriole Park.  The Orioles have 15 hits; Nick Markakis and Felix Pie each get a home run, three hits, and three runs batted in for the O's.  Attendance is 13,961.

Sheila Lukins, a cook and food writer, dies at age 66 of brain cancer at her home in Manhattan, New York, NY.  She co-wrote "The Silver Palate" series of cookbooks, and wrote "The New Basics Cookbook." She had been food editor of Parade magazine since 1986, and had her own regular column there.  She was born in 1942 in Philadelphia, PA.

The Orioles lose to the Yankees at Oriole Park, 5-1. The Orioles get only three hits off of Andy Pettitte and two relievers, but one hit is the 6th home run by Melvin Mora.  Attendance is 25,063.

The Orioles lose to the Yankees at Oriole Park, 9-6.  Luke Scott hits his 21st home run of the season for the Orioles. Attendance is 25,782. The Orioles are now 54-79, which is 25 games below .500 and a season-worst.

Sep. 2, 2009 The Orioles lose to the Yankees, 10-2, at Oriole Park. The Yankees score 7 runs in the top of the 9th inning.  Attendance is 21,126.  The Orioles sink to a 54-80 record, a season-high 26 games below .500.
Sep. 3, 2009 Savings interest rates continue to fall.  The average 5-year certificate of deposit opened today pays only 2.2 percent interest per year, compared to 3.8 percent at this time last year.  Most savings accounts and money-market accounts pay less than one percent per year, compared to nearly 2 percent a year ago.  And most checking accounts pay no interest at all, whereas the majority of them did pay interest a year ago.

The Duck vehicle tours of Baltimore go out of business. The Ducks were amphibious land/water vehicles that operated as open-air buses on Baltimore streets, but as boats in the Baltimore waterways.

The Orioles lose to the Red Sox, 10-0, at Boston.  David Hernandez is the losing pitcher.  The Orioles get only 5 hits.  The Red Sox hit 6 home runs, and they score 8 runs before they hit a single. This loss clinches the 12th consecutive losing season for the Orioles; they have a 56-82 record.

A large aluminum number "8" statue erected in front of Oriole Park to honor Cal Ripken Jr., is stolen in the wee small hours.  The pickup truck carrying the 8 statue is discovered on the east side of Patterson Park on Lombard Street, about three miles from the theft site.  Four men--three from Essex and one from Baltimore--are arrested and charged with felony theft.

Heavy rain of 2 to 5 inches falls in the Baltimore area in the morning and early afternoon.  It is heaviest in northern Baltimore County and in Harford County. Minor flooding occurs in some areas.  High temperatures are mostly in the upper 50s to middle 60s, making this the coolest day in Baltimore in several months.

Larry Gelbart, a television and film writer and author, dies at age 81 in Beverly Hills, CA. He was one of the creators of the M*A*S*H television series, and he wrote and produced many of its episodes in its first four years. He also co-wrote the screenplay of the film "Tootsie" and wrote the screenplay for "Oh, God!"  He was born on February 25, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois.

On the 8th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, memorial observances are held near Ground Zero in New York City.  The names of all of the nearly 2800 people killed there (except those of the hijackers) are read.  Also, memorial observances are held at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., where 184 people were killed by terrorists on September 11, 2001, and near Shanksville, Pa., where a jetliner crashed by terrorists killed everyone on the plane on that date.

The Orioles defeat the Yankees, 10-4, at  New York.  Justin Turner of the Orioles gets his first Major League hit, a single.  There are two rain delays totaling over two hours.  Much of the game is played with rain falling.

Patrick Swayze, a film and television actor, dies of pancreatic cancer at age 57 in Los Angeles, CA.  He starred in films such as "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost" and in the A&E television series "The Beast."  He was born on August 18, 1952 in Houston, Texas.

Mary Travers dies of leukemia at age 72 in Danbury, Connecticut.  She was a member of the folk-singing trio Peter, Paul and Mary, which had several big pop hits in the 1960s including "Puff, the Magic Dragon" and "Leaving On A Jet Plane." She was born on November 9, 1936, in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Orioles defeat the Rays, 4-2.  Matt Wieters hits a homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to win it.  There was a rain delay of one hour and 20 minutes in the 8th inning. Attendance is 10,548.

A 72-inch water main breaks at about 4:00 PM beside Broening Highway in Dundalk, washing out a small section of the highway and flooding about 75 blocks of Dundalk and Turners Station with water that is waist-high in some places.  No one is injured.  The gush of water from the main is stopped at about 6:30 PM, and water begins to recede from the affected areas.  No one can get into or out of the flooded area for several hours, except for emergency workers.

U.S. stocks surge, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining more than 200 points (more than 2 percent) to move above 10,000 once again.

Tropical Storm Ida is downgraded to a tropical depression as it moves off the coasts of Nicaragua and Honduras and into the Caribbean Sea.

Unemployment in the United States rises to 10.2 percent.  This is the highest unemployment figure in 25 years.  Michigan continues to be the U.S. state with the highest unemployment rate: 15 percent.

The U.S. House of Representatives passes the Affordable Health Care for America Act, 220-215, and passes it on to the Senate for passage.

Baltimore and its suburbs experience the first hard freeze of the season, with the temperature dipping to 25 degrees F at 6:00 AM in Catonsville and 28 degrees F at BWI Marshall Airport.

Ida increases in strength from a tropical depression to a tropical storm once again, with maxiumum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour in the morning.  Then it continues increasing rapidly in strength throughout the rest of the day, becoming a hurricane with 75-mph winds by late evening.  It is moving northward in the western Caribbean Sea, east of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
