A magnitude 6.9 earthquake strikes the San Francisco Bay Area of California, killing 67 people and causing more than $5 billion in damages. The quake is centered near Loma Prieta Peak (approximately 60 miles south of San Francisco) in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

During the earthquake, Candlestick Park (stadium) in San Francisco suffers damage to its upper deck as pieces of concrete fall from the baffle at the top of the stadium and the power is knocked out. The earthquake occurs just a few minutes before Game 3 of the World Series was to begin, between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics. The game is postponed out of concerns for the safety of everyone in the ballpark as well as the loss of power. (The World Series resumes on October 27 and finishes the next day.)
