Disco Demolition Night is held at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. It is a Major League Baseball promotion that ends in a riot. At the climax of the event, a crateful of disco phonograph records is blown up on the field between games of a twi-night doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. Many people in attendance come to see the explosion rather than the games and rush onto the field after the explosion. The playing field is so damaged by the explosion and by the people rushing onto the field that the second game is initially postponed but the next day the second game is forfeited by the White Sox to the Tigers.

In the late 1970s, dance-oriented disco is the most popular music genre in the United States, particularly after being featured in hit films such as Saturday Night Fever (1977). However, disco sparks a major backlash from rock music  fans—an opposition prominent enough that the White Sox, seeking to fill seats at Comiskey Park during a lackluster season, engage Chicago shock jock and anti-disco campaigner Steve Dahl for the promotion at the doubleheader. Dahl's sponsoring radio station is 97.9 WLUP, so admission is discounted to 98 cents for attendees who turn in a disco record. Between games, Dahl destroys the collected vinyl in an explosion.

White Sox officials had hoped for a crowd of 20,000, about 5,000 more than usual. Instead, at least 50,000—including tens of thousands of Dahl's adherents—pack the stadium, and thousands more continue to sneak in after gates are closed. Many of the records are not collected by staff and are thrown like flying discs from the stands. After Dahl blows up the collected records, thousands of fans storm the field and remain there until dispersed by riot police.

The Orioles have the day off.

Nov. 28, 1979 Air New Zealand Flight 901 (TE901) crashes into Mount Erebus on Ross Island, Antarctica, killing all 237 passengers and 20 crew on board. Air New Zealand had been operating scheduled Antarctic sightseeing flights since 1977. This flight was supposed to leave Auckland Airport in the morning and spend a few hours flying over the Antarctic continent, before returning to Auckland in the evening via Christchurch. The accident was primarily caused by a correction made to the coordinates of the flight path the night before the disaster, coupled with a failure to inform the flight crew of the change, with the result that the aircraft, instead of being directed by computer down McMurdo Sound (as the crew had been led to believe), was instead rerouted to a path toward Mount Erebus.
