Oct. 7, 1978 "American Top 40," a pop-music-countdown radio program, expands from three hours to four hours because songs are getting longer, and it allows Casey Kasem to add two or three "long-distance dedicatons" to the show each week.  The dedications consist of letters read by Casey from listeners to other listeners which include the title of a song they want dedicated; Casey then plays the song.  Most of the time the requested song is a past hit, but occasionally it's still in the Top 40 and thus becomes a part of the countdown.  Also around this time, Casey starts playing, at three songs per week, all of the Number One hits of the 1960s and the 1970s.  Another added feature is the playing of the top 3 songs of the previous week, before the current week's countdown begins.
