A Nigeria Airways Boeing 707 crashes while attempting to land at Kano International Airport in Nigeria, killing 176 of the 202 people on board. Kano International Airport was experiencing high winds at the time. The aircraft landed nose wheel first, and the nose wheel collapsed after hitting a depression in the runway. The right main landing gear leg subsequently collapsed. The 707 turned 180 degrees, excursed from the runway and burst into flames.

Howard H. Aiken dies at age 73 in St, Louis, Missouri.  He was a physicist and computing pioneer, and the primary designer of the first Harvard Mark I computer that was installed at Harvard University in February 1944. He was born on March 9, 1900 (some sources say March 8) in Hoboken, New Jersey.

In their home opener and their first gasme of the 1973 season, the Orioles defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-0. Don Baylor goes 4-for-4 with a home run, a triple, and two doubles, and drives in 3 runs. Brooks Robinson hits 2 home runs and drives in 4 runs.  Dave McNally pitches a complete-game shutout, allowing the Brewers only 3 hits. Attendance is 26,543 at Memorial Stadium.

Ron Blomberg of the New York Yankees becomes the first-ever major-league designated hitter. In the first inning, he is walked by pitcher Luis Tiant with the bases loaded, but the Red Sox prevail 15-5 on 20 hits at Fenway Park in Boston. Carlton Fisk of the Red Sox hits two home runs and a double and drives in 6 runs.

At the Oakland Coliseum in California, Tony Oliva of the Minnesota Twins becomes the first major-league designated hitter to hit a home run. He hits a 2-run homer in the first inning off of pitcher Catfish Hunter to help the Twins to an 8-3 win over the Oakland Athletics.

The Orioles defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-7, coming back from a 6-1 deficit. Merv Rettenmund hits a home run and a double for the Orioles. Former Oriole Dave May hits 2 home runs for the Brewers. Mike Cuellar pitches 7 innings for the Orioles, giving up 6 runs, but Doyle Alexander gets the winning decision in relief. Attendance is 6,740.

Jim Palmer pitches 7 innings for the Orioles, fllowed by Grant Jackson with 3 innings. Eddie Watt pitches 3 innings in relief and gets the winning decision. The Orioles improve their season record to 3-0.

The Orioles win agsinst the Detroit Tigers, 1-0 in 10 innings. They Score when Bobby Grich hits a sacrifice bunt but it is booted by the first baseman, allowing Mark Belanger to score from second base. Dave McNally pirtches 9-2/3 innings and gets his second win; Orlando Pena gets the final out and earns a save. Mickey Lolich pitches the entire 10 innings for the Tigers. The Orioles are 4-0 this season.

The Brewers get only three hits, but two of them are home runs. Bill Parsons of the Brewers pitches 7-1/3 innings and gives up just the one Oriole hit, but with 6 walks and no strikeouts. Mike Cuellar pitches a complete game for the Orioles in a losing effort.

U.S. Vice President Spiro T. Agnew appears before the federal court in Baltimore, and pleads nolo contendere (no contest) to one felony charge, tax evasion, for the year 1967. Attorney General Elliot Richardson agrees that there will be no further prosecution of Agnew, and releases a 40-page summary of the evidence. Agnew is fined $10,000 and placed on three years' unsupervised probation. At the same time, Agnew submits a formal letter of resignation to the U.S. Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, and sends a letter to U.S. President Richard M. Nixon stating he (Agnew) is resigning from the vice presidency in the best interest of the nation. Nixon responds with a letter concurring that the resignation is necessary to avoid a lengthy period of division and uncertainty, and applauding Agnew for his patriotism and dedication to the welfare of the United States.

A series of events called the Saturday Night Massacre take place in Washington, D.C., in the evening during the Watergate scandal.  U.S. President Richard Nixon orders Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox; Richardson refuses and resigns effective immediately. Nixon then orders Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus to fire Cox; Ruckelshaus refuses, and also resigns. Nixon then orders the third-most-senior official at the Justice Department, Solicitor General Robert Bork, to fire Cox. Bork carries out the dismissal as Nixon asked. Bork stated later that he intended to resign afterward, but was persuaded by Richardson and Ruckelshaus to stay on for the good of the Justice Department.

Saudi Arabia and the other Arab states agree to join the oil embargo. This Arab oil embargo lasts until March of 1974 but it has a profound impact on the U.S. and the world, plunging the U.S. into a deep recession in 1974 and early 1975.

Sydney Opera House, one of the world's most distinctive buildings, opens on the banks of Sydney Harbor, Australia. The unusual design is by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon. (The work on Sydney Opera House had begun 15 years earlier.)

William Haines dies at age 73 in Santa Monica, California.  He was a movie actor, appearing in films from 1922 to 1935. He appeared in such movies as "The Midnight Express" (1924), "Little Annie Rooney" (1926), "Navy Blues" (1929), "Way Out West" (1930), and "Fast Life" (1932).  His movie career was cut short when he refused to deny his homosexuality. He then started a successful interior design business with his life partner Jimmie Shields.  Charles William Haines was born on January 2, 1900 in Staunton, Virginia.
