A break-in occurs at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters offices in the Watergate Office Building in Washington. DC.  James W. McCord Jr., a former CIA officer and an electronics expert, leads "burglaries" of the offices and also installs listening devices and telephone wiretaps. While successful with installing the listening devices, they soon determine that they need repairs. They plot a second "burglary" in order to take care of the situation. That "burglary" takes place on June 16, 1972.

Two phones inside the DNC headquarters' offices are said to have been wiretapped. One was Robert Spencer Oliver's phone. At the time, Oliver was working as the executive director of the Association of State Democratic Chairmen. The other phone belonged to DNC chairman Larry O'Brien. The FBI found no evidence that O'Brien's phone was bugged; however, it was determined that an effective listening device was installed in Oliver's phone.

Sometime after midnight, Watergate Complex (in Washington, D.C.) security guard Frank Wills notices tape covering the latches on some of the complex's doors leading from the underground parking garage to several offices, which allowed the doors to close but stay unlocked. He removes the tape, believing it is nothing. When he returns a short time later and discovers that someone had retaped the locks, he calls the police. Responding to the call is an unmarked car with three plainclothes officers (Sgt. Paul W. Leeper, Officer John B. Barrett, and Officer Carl M. Shoffler) working the overnight "bum squad"—dressed as hippies and on the lookout for drug deals and other street crimes. Alfred Baldwin, on "spotter" duty at the Howard Johnson's motel across the street, is distracted watching the film Attack of the Puppet People on TV and fails to observe the arrival of the police car in front of the hotel. Neither does he see the plainclothes officers investigating the DNC's sixth-floor suite of 29 offices. By the time Baldwin finally notices unusual activity on the sixth floor and radioes the burglars, it is already too late. The police apprehend five men, later identified as Virgilio Gonzalez, Bernard Barker, James McCord, Eugenio Martinez, and Frank Sturgis. They are charged with attempted burglary and attempted interception of telephone and other communications. The Washington Post reported that "police found lock-picks and door jimmies, almost $2,300 in cash, most of it in $100 bills with the serial numbers in sequence ... a short wave receiver that could pick up police calls, 40 rolls of unexposed film, two 35 millimeter cameras and three pen-sized tear gas guns."  (The later revelation that U.S. President Richard M. Nixon knew about the break-ins and burglary attempts, and attempted to cover them up, leads to his resignation on August 9, 1974.)

Tropical Storm Agnes strikes Baltimore and the rest of central and eastern Maryland, causing extensive flooding and 19 deaths in Maryland. Localities from Virginia to eastern Canada also are flooded.  Localized rainfall of 3 to 6 inches in just a couple of hours produces extreme flooding of the Patapsco River, which swamps downtown Ellicott City and the Daniels textile mills.  The Patapsco River rises to as much as 40 feet above normal. But "only" 1.82 inches of rain falls at Friendship (now BWI Marshall) Airport.  Two casualties of the storm are the Daniels textile mills mentioned above, and Gwynn Oak Amusement Park near Baltimore, which is severely damaged when the Gwynns Falls overruns its banks. The amusement park reopens briefly with reduced attractions but then permanently closes. Within a year, the C.R. Daniels Company builds replacement mills on much higher ground nearby.

By this date, Baltimore weather radio station KEC83 is broadcasting on 162.400 MHz and receivable by special weather radios and by multipurpose radios with a weather band. Originally the station broadcasts from an antenna located in downtown Baltimore, but later the transmitter is moved to the site of the WBJC tower in Pikesville, Maryland (visible from the Baltimore Beltway), where it remains today. Originally the station's announcers were human and were located at Friendship International (now BWI Marshall) Airport, but then the National Weather Service consolidated its Baltimore operations along with others in a weather center in Sterling, Virginia, from which the broadcasts originate today. The station began using computer-generated voices on some parts of the broadcast in June 1998, with all parts of the broadcast using computer-generated voices by August 2002. At first, several computer-generated voices, including female ones, were used as "auditions" on the station, but then one male voice was selected to do all broadcasts. This man recorded his voice saying each individual word that is likely to be used in weather broadcasts. A computer reads the human-prepared text and sounds it out using the man's voice for broadcast over the station.
