This is the final day that cigarette commercials are seen and heard on U.S. television and radio. The U.S. government bans them after concluding that cigarette smoking may be harmful to one's health. | Jan. 2, 1971 | In Glasgow, Scotland, at the Ibrox Park stadium (now Ibrox Stadium), 66 soccer spectators are killed and more than 200 are injured when they try to exit the stadium via an outdoor staircase that had long been considered restrictive to the movement of large crowds, and on which accidents had happened before. Most of the victims are killed by compressive asphyxiation after falling or being shoved down the stairs, as bodies piled up to 6 feet deep. There is speculation that someone in the exiting crowd may have fallen, setting off the chain reaction. Taye Diggs is born Scott Leo Berry in Newark, New Jersey. Among the weapons used by the troopers are shotguns, which lead to the wounding and killing of hostages and inmates who were not resisting. Former prison officers are allowed to participate, a decision later called "inexcusable" by the commission established by New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller to study the riot and the aftermath.
