In Kent. Ohio, just before midnight, a group of people leave a bar and throw beer bottles at cars and break downtown storefronts.  A bank window breaks, setting off an alarm.  More people soon join in the vandalism, and looting occurs.  The police arrive, and some of the crowd of about 100 begin throwing beer bottles and shouting abscenities at them.  The police restore order after about an hour.  Other bars in Kent close as a precautionary measure.

Rhodes to send the National Guard to Kent.  When the National Guard arrive in town about 10:00 PM, there's a large demonstration in progress on the Kent State campus.  The campus Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) building, which had been scheduled for demolition, is on fire.  More than 1,000 students gather near the burning building, many cheering. While trying to put out the blaze, Kent firefighters and police are hit with rocks and other objects.  A fire hose is slashed.  The National Guard uses tear gas to disperse the crowd, and makes many arrests.  At least one student is wounded with a bayonet.

About 2,000 students gather for a protest at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.  They are protesting the U.S. invasion of Cambodia.  Because of other protests and civil disturbances on previous days, the Ohio National Guard is there, also.  After a couple of attempts to disperse the students with tear gas, the National Guard fires their guns.  Some Guardsmen fire their guns into the ground or the air, not at the students.  Four students are killed and nine others wounded by the Ohio National Guard.  The Guardsmen fire 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, although some sources say the firings lasted longer.  Some of the students who were shot were protesting the American invasion of Cambodia, but others had been merely walking by or observing the protest from a distance.  Of the students killed, the nearest was 265 feet from the Guardsmen. Of the four students killed, two were protesters but two others were simply walking from one class to the next.

***** A childhood friend of mine came over to my house and said, "Hi, shy guy!" I didn't have a rhyming response on the fly, but the next time we met, I said, "Hello, mellow fellow!" We're both low-key people but we enjoyed talking in rhymes like this. Also in alliteration, as in: "Perry's pink pimple potion performs perfectly." (See the end of 1965.)
