Morris Chestnut is born in Cerritos, California. He is an actor and producer. He first came to prominence for his role as Ricky in the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood. He has appeared in feature films and on television series, including the starring role of FBI Agent Will Keaton in the NBC TV series The Enemy Within.

During the Vietnam War, Operation Barrier Reef begins as Assault Support Patrol Boats (ASPB) and other river craft establish patrol sectors along canals westward from the Vam Co Tay to the Mekong River. (Thus, by early 1969, a patrolled waterway interdiction barrier extends almost uninterrupted from Tay Ninh Province northwest of Saigon to the Gulf of Siam.)

To Be Young, Gifted and Black: Lorraine Hansberry in her Own Words, a play about the life of American writer Lorraine Hansberry, premieres in New York, NY.

Christy Turlington is born in Oakland, California. She's a Salvadoran-American supermodel, charity-founder and campaigner, and filmmaker. She represented Calvin Klein's Eternity campaign in 1989 and again in 2014, and also represents Maybelline. Turlington was named one of Glamour's Women of the Year in 2013, and, in 2014, was included on the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world. Turlington initially attracted fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a supermodel.

Super Bowl III is played. It's the third AFL–NFL Championship Game in professional American football, and the first to officially bear the trademark name "Super Bowl". It  is played at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, and this game is regarded as one of the greatest upsets in both American football history and in the recorded history of sports. The 18-point underdog American Fooball League (AFL) champion New York Jets defeat the National Football League (NFL) champion Baltimore Colts by a score of 16–7.  Jets quarterback Joe Namath famously made an appearance three days before the Super Bowl at the Miami Touchdown Club and personally guaranteed his team's victory. His team backed up his words by controlling the majority of the game, building a 16–0 lead by the fourth quarter off of a touchdown run by Matt Snell and three field goals by Jim Turner. Colts quarterback Earl Morrall threw three interceptions before being replaced by Johnny Unitas, who then led Baltimore to its only touchdown, during the last few minutes of the game. Joe Namath of the Jets is named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Fuller Albright dies at age 69 in Boston, MA. He was an endocrinologist who identified two genetic illnesses, Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy and McCune–Albright syndrome. He made numerous contributions to his field, especially in the area of calcium metabolism. He was born on January 12, 1900, in Buffalo, New York.
