In the American Football League (AFL) Championship game at War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo, NY, the Kansas City Chiefs defeat the  Buffalo Bills 31-7. Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson throws two touchdown passes and Mike Garrett runs for two touchdowns.

In the National Football League (NFL) Championship at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, the Green Bay Packers defeat the  Dallas Cowboys 34-27. Packers quarterback Bart Starr throws four touchdown passes to four different receivers, and the Packers' Jim Grabowski returns a funble 18 yards for another touchdown.

Starting today, the FCC requires AM and FM radio stations owned by the same company in the same broadcast market to have no more than 50 percent simulcasting; each station must have programming different from the other at least 50 percent of the time. (At this time, the same ccompany can own a maximum of only one AM station, one FM station, and one TV station in the same broadcast market. Overall, one company can own a maximum of 5 AM radio stations, 5 FM radio stations, and 5 TV stations in the U.S.).

Tia Carrere is born Althea Rae Duhinio Janairo in Honolulu, Hawaii. She's an actress, singer and former model who got her first big break as a regular on the daytime soap opera General Hospital. Carrere played Cassandra Wong in the feature films Wayne's World and Wayne's World 2; Juno Skinner in True Lies; Nani Pelekai in the Lilo & Stitch films and TV series; Queen Tyr'ahnee in Duck Dodgers; Richard Lewis's girlfriend, Cha Cha, in Curb Your Enthusiasm; and starred as Sydney Fox in the television series Relic Hunter, as well as Lady Danger opposite RuPaul in Netflix's AJ and the Queen. Carrere also appeared as a contestant in the second season of Dancing with the Stars and the fifth season of The Celebrity Apprentice. In addition to acting, Carrere has won two Grammy Awards for her music.

Former nightclub owner Jack Ruby dies at age 55 in a hospital in Dallas, Texas.  (He shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24, 1963, after Oswald had been accused of the November 22 assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.) He was born Jacob Leon Rubenstein on March 25, 1911, in Chicago, Illinois.

Benjamin Darvill (Son of Dave) is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He is a Canadian musician and singer–songwriter, based in the United Kingdom. Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov is killed when his Soyuz 1 spacecraft smashes into the Earth at roughly 100 feet per second after the drogue parachute and main braking parachute fail to deploy correctly. His is the first human spaceflight fatality. Komarov was born on March 16, 1927, in Moscow, Soviet Union, and he was an engineer by trade and a member of the Soviet Air Force where he had a title equivalent to colonel.
