The musical comedy "Sweet Charity" starring Gwen Verdon, debuts on Broadway in New York City.

The Uniform Time Act of 1966 is signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson, establishing a uniform (same) time within each time zone.  It also creates Daylight Saving Time to begin on the last Sunday of April and end on the last Sunday of October. During Daylight Saving Time, clocks are one hour ahead of Standard Time. Prior to this legislation, each locality kept its own time, based on the position of the sun and sometimes other factors such as the influence of certain cities upon neighboring ones.  In one 35-mile stretch of Route 2 between Moundsville, West Virginia, and Steubenville, Ohio, there were seven time changes!
