Indiana and five other U.S. Midwestern states are hit by a total of 47 tornadoes, killing 271 people and injuring more than 1,500 people. In Indiana alone, ten tornadoes kill 137 people and injure more than 1,200. (The swarm of tornadoes comes to be known as the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak.)

During the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak, a large and devastating tornado damages or destroys large portions of the city of Crystal Lake, Illinois. Six people are killed by the tornado, and a further 75 wounded. Damages in the city total over $1.5 million, as 80 homes and a shopping center are completely destroyed. (Disaster shelters are set up to house the homeless, and the governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner, Jr., personally visits the city to view the damage.)

The U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic, William Tapley Bennett, who had sent numerous reports to U.S. President Lyndon Johnson, reports that the Dominican Republic's Civil War situation had reached life-threatening proportions for US citizens and that the rebels are receiving foreign support. Bennett stresses that the U.S. must act immediately, as the creation of an international coalition would be time-consuming. Contrary to the suggestions of his advisers, Johnson authorizes the transformation of evacuation operations into a large-scale military intervention through Operation Power Pack, which is aimed to prevent the development of what he sees as a second Cuban Revolution. (It is the first U.S. military intervention in Latin America in more than 30 years.)

At 2:16 AM, the 3rd Brigade of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division lands at the San Isidro Air Base in the Domincan Republic and starts the U.S. military intervention in the Dominican Republic's civil war. During the next couple of hours, two brigade combat teams and heavy equipment are also dispatched. At sunrise the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment movs up the San Isidoro highway, securing a position east of the Duarte bridge. The 1st Battalion 505th Infantry Regiment remains at the airbase and seds out patrols to the perimeter. A force of 1,700 Marines of the 6th Marine Expeditionary Unit occupy an area containing a number of foreign embassies. The locale is proclaimed an International Security Zone by the Organization of American States (OAS). Earlier in the day, the OAS also issues a resolution calling the combatants to end all hostilities. At 4:30 p.m., representatives of the loyalists, the rebels, and the U.S. military signed a ceasefire that was to take effect at 11:45 p.m. That timing favors the demoralized Loyalists, who had lost control of Ciudad Colonial.

The Constitutionalists launch a second and final attempt to expand the boundaries of their stronghold in the Dominican Republic. In the bloodiest battle of the U.S. intervention, the rebels begin their attack on US outposts. Using the greatest firepower yet, they use tear gas grenades, .50-caliber machine guns, 20 mm guns, mortars, rocket launchers, and tank fire. The 1st battalions of the U.S. 505th and 508th Infantry quickly go on the offensive. (Two days of fighting costs the U.S. five killed and 31 wounded in action. The OAS forces, consisting of a large number of Brazilians and whose orders are to remain at their defenses, count five wounded. The Constitutionalists claim 67 dead and 165 wounded.)

This month, Polaroid introduces its Swinger camera, otherwise known as the Model 20 Land Camera. It is the first inexpensive instant camera, selling at $19.95 (or less, for the Model 15, a flashless version). The Polaroid Swinger is targeted toward teens and young adults, with a catchy rock-and-roll jingle in its TV commercials. The camera's aperture/shutter speed is adjusted with a red knob until the word "YES" is displayed in the viewfinder to indicate sufficient light for proper exposure; otherwise one can use the built-in flashbulb socket and reflector for flash photos. It can be swung from the wrist using its wriststrap; hence the name Swinger. It can take only black-and-white photos and it uses Polaroid 20-Series roll film. After a photo is taken, the photographer pulls the exposed but undeveloped photo from the camera until the film stops; it remains attached to the camera. The photographer counts 60 seconds after taking the picture, while holding the camera still, to allow the photograph to self-develop, then "zips off" the printed photo from the camera and negative/backing paper. Immediately afterward, the photographer coats the developed photo with a clear stopping/fixing substance to prevent it from overdeveloping and from fading.  The 2-1/8" by 2-7/8" photos have a black reverse side, which prohibits writing legibly on the backs with blue or black ink. People who buy the Swinger camera use only two rolls of film with it on average. Some people do not like the inconvenience of having to keep the camera still while a photo is developing (otherwise the photo may turn out streaky), the inconvenience of having to coat each newly developed photo, the inability of the camera to take color photos, and the small size and overall mediocre quality of the photos. There is also a model 3000, known as Big Swinger, which uses Polaroid 100-Series pack film instead of roll film. The Swinger camera is discontinued in 1970, but as of that year it is Polaroid's best-selling product ever.
