A magnitude 9.2 earthquake strikes south-central Alaska at 5:36 PM Alaska Standard Time, the strongest earthquake ever recorded in North America. Across south-central Alaska, ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis resulting from the earthquake cause about 131 deaths. Six hundred miles (970 km) of fault rupture at once and move up to 60 feet, releasing about 500 years of stress buildup. Soil liquefaction, fissures, landslides, and other ground failures cause major structural damage in several communities and much damage to property. Anchorage sustains great destruction or damage to many inadequately earthquake-engineered houses, buildings, and infrastructure (paved streets, sidewalks, water and sewer mains, electrical systems, and other man-made equipment), particularly in the several landslide zones along Knik Arm. Two hundred miles southwest, some areas near Kodiak are permanently raised by 30 feet. Southeast of Anchorage, areas around the head of Turnagain Arm near Girdwood and Portage drop as much as 8 feet, requiring reconstruction and fill to raise the Seward Highway above the new high tide mark.

In the case Griffin v. County School Board of Prince Edward County (Virginia), the U.S. Supreme Court orders the county to reopen its public schools. Officials had closed all public schools in the county beginning in June 1959 to try to circumvent the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court desegregation decision made in the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (Kansas) case. The county instead offered tuition vouchers to be used at private nonsectarian schools in the county. However, all private schools there were still segregated, and there were no blacks-only private schools, so the effect was to exclude black children in the county from attending schools from June 1959 until the start of the 1964-65 school year.
