By this date, Kodak introduces its Instamatic line of cameras. The cameras use a film cartridge for the first time. This 126 film cartridge is easily put into, and taken out of, the cameras. No longer do consumers need to thread camera film onto a sprocket when loading film. Also, the film is shielded from exposure until it is in the camera and the camera is closed, so the camera can be loaded with film in broad daylight instead of in subdued light. The film in each 126 cartridge has 12 exposures or 20 exposures, with 8 exposures and 16 exposures being much less common. The initial Instamatic camera, model 100, is fixed-focus and fixed-aperture, with manual film advance (no rewinding being necessary). The integrated flash unit is powered by two AAA batteries and has a pop-up reflector into which is placed an individual flashbulb. A new (unused) flashbulb must be used for each flash picture taken. Later Instamatic cameras use Flashcubes (four flashbulbs in a rotating cube, developed by Sylvania and powered by button batteries) and, later, Magicubes (four flashbulbs in a cube that has an innovative non-battery way of setting off the flashbulbs). Standard photographic prints from Instamatic cameras are square, usually 3 x 3 inches to 4 x 4 inches. Later, Instamatic cameras are made with many other features including automatic aperture setting, adjustable focus, and an adaptor lens that allows photographing of subjects as close as 18 inches from the camera. Instamatic cameras become extremely successful, selling more than 50 million units by 1980.

The nuclear submarine U.S.S. Thresher sinks uncontrollably during testing about 200 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, killing all 129 people on board.  Evidence suggests that sea water enters the Thresher, spraying at high pressure through a poorly-welded or brazed joint in a salt-water piping system, and shorts out the electrical system, causing the reactor to shut down.  The crew than isolates the steam system by closing valves to the steam turbines to prevent a too-rapid cooldown of the reactor.  This in turn disables the steam turbines that provide propulsion and stabilization.  The crew attempts to blow water from the sub's ballast tanks in an emergency effort to get it to surface, but ice clogs the ballast valves due to depressurization. (Heaters and dryers are then placed on the ballast valves of all other current and future U.S. submarines.)  The Thresher implodes.  The sub's remains are later found about 8,400 feet below the sea surface, in six major sections.

U.S. President John F. Kennedy is assassinated at 12:30 PM Central Standard Time while riding in a presidential motorcade in Dealy Plaza in Dallas, Texas. He is shot multiple times, including at least two shots that hit his head with such force that "blood and brains splattered everywhere." John Kennedy is rushed to nearby Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas where he is pronounced dead about a half-hour after the shooting. Also riding in Kennedy's car in the motorcade were Texas governor John Connally, who is seriously injured but recovers, and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Connally's wife Nellie, who are physically uninjured.

Dallas police arrest a suspect in the Kennedy assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald, about 70 minutes later after the assassination. Oswald had also shot and killed Dallas police officer J. D. Tippit a short time after he shot and killed Kennedy. Oswald is taken to the Dallas city jail where he spends the night.

U.S. Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson takes the presidential oath of office aboard Air Force One just two hours and eight minutes after Kennedy's assassination, and becomes the 36th U.S. President. He was sworn in by family friend U.S. District Judge Sarah T. Hughes. In the rush, Johnson takes the oath of office using a Roman Catholic missal from President Kennedy's desk, despite not being Catholic, due to the missal being mistaken for a Bible.

After the Kennedy assassination and Johnson's becoming president, the United States is without a vice president. (This office will remain vacant until January 20, 1965, when Hubert Humphrey becomes vice president as Johnson, upon being elected the previous November, is sworn in again as president.)

FM radio station WCBC broadcasts for the first time. The station at 105.7 MHz is licensed to Catonsville and has a Christian radio format. One week after U.S. President Kennedy's assassination, new President Lyndon Johnson issues an executive order to rename NASA's Apollo Launch Operations Center and the NASA/Air Force Cape Canaveral launch facilities as the John F. Kennedy Space Center. Cape Canaveral (in Florida) was officially known as Cape Kennedy from 1963 until 1973.

Also, U.S. President Johnson establishes a panel headed by Chief Justice Earl Warren, known as the Warren Commission, through executive order to investigate Kennedy's assassination and surrounding conspiracies. The commission conducted extensive research and hearings and unanimously concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination. However, the report remains controversial among some conspiracy theorists.
