Cameroon gains independence from France.

Margaret Sullavan dies at age 50 of a barbituarate overdose, ruled accidental, in New Haven, Connecticut. She was a stage snd screen actress. Sullavan began her career onstage in 1929. In 1933, she caught the attention of film director John M. Stahl and had her debut on the screen that same year in Only Yesterday. Sullavan preferred working on the stage and made only 16 films, four of which were opposite James Stewart in a popular partnership that included The Mortal Storm and The Shop Around the Corner. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Three Comrades (1938). She retired from the screen in the early 1940s, but returned in 1950 to make her last film, No Sad Songs for Me, in which she played a woman who was dying of cancer. For the rest of her career, she appeared only on the stage. She was born Margeret Brooke Sullavan on May 16, 1909 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Four Black freshmen from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College in Greensboro, North Carolina, walk into an F.W. Woolworth store in Greensboro at about 4:30 PM and sit at the lunch counter, but are denied service. They stay there until the store closes that night. This leads to more sit-in protests, with many more people participating, over the coming days and months.

Baltimore FM radio station WFMM broadcasts for the first time. It's at 93.1 MHz and it plays easy-listening music, typically instrumentals, and also some classifcal music.  It's one of the rare stand-alone FM stations, without an accompanying AM station, TV station, or newspaper ownership. This station will change its call letters to WPOC on September 2, 1974, and change its format to country music at that time.

The world's strongest earthquake ever recorded hits southern Chile, killing 1,655 people. The magnitude 9.5 earthquake starts at 3:11 PM local time and lasts for about 10 minutes. The most-affected city is Valdivia, Chile. The resulting tsunamis hit the coasts of Chile, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia, and the Aleutian Islands. Tsunami waves up to 82 feet high devastate parts of the Chilean coast. The tsunamis also devastate Hilo, Hawaii, with waves as high as 35 feet even though the epicenter of the earthquake is 6,200 miles away.

Cal Ripken Jr. is born Calvin Edwin Ripken Jr. in Havre de Grace, Maryland. He becomes a Major League Baseball player for the Orioles, playing for 21 seasons (1981-2001), mostly at shortstop. He holds the major-league record for most cosecutive games played: 2,632. Remarkably, he did not sit out any games because of injury until well after he voluntarily ended his consecutive-games streak. In his career, Cal batted .276, had 3,184 hits, 431 home runs, and 1,695 runs batted in, and he won two Gold Glove Awards for his defense. He was a 19-time All-Star and was twice named American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP). He played alongside one of his brothers, Billy Ripken, from 1987 to 1992.
