Luna 1 (also known as Mechta, E-1 No. 4, and First Lunar Rover), launched by the Soviet Union, becomes the first manmade object to reach the vicinity of the Moon and to reach heliocentric orbit. A malfunction in the ground-based control system causes an error in the upper stage rocket's burn time, and the spacecraft misses the Moon by more than three times the Moon's radius. It flies past the Moon and goes into heliocentric orbit.

Luna 1, a spacecraft launched by the Soviet Union on January 2, 1959, runs out of battery power when it is 371,000 miles from Earth, making it impossible to track its flight further. The batteries were designed for a minimum of 40 hours but last for 62. The spacecraft misses the Moon, its intended target.

Rock-and-roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson die when the small airplane they are aboard crashes near Clear Lake, Iowa. Buddy Holly dies at age 22 and was born on September 7, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas.  Ritchie Valens dies at age 17 and was born on May 13, 1941 in Pacoma, Los Angeles, California. The Big Bopper dies at age 28 and was born Jiles Perry Richardson on October 24, 1930 in Sabine Pass, Port Arthur, Texas.

A Capital Airlines passenger plane crashes in Chase, Maryland, killing all 31 people on board. The plane had taken off from New York City en route to Atlanta. While flying over Maryland at about 14,000 feet, the plane encounters severe turbulence from nearby thunderstorms at 4:13 PM. The pilots lose control of the plane and it begins a steep descent. The downward speed of the aircraft exceeds its "never exceed speed", and the stabilizers and right wing rip away from the plane, followed by disintegration of the left wing and part of the fuselage. The remainer of the fuselage crashes into the ground.

A rhesus monkey named Able and a squirrel monkey named Baker are placed in the nose cone of a Jupiter missile and launched by the U.S. Army for a suborbital flight. They ride to an altitude of 360 miles and cover a distance of 1,699 miles down the Atlantic Missile Range from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
