The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a newly built freight ship, has its christening and launch ceremony in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The event is plagued by misfortunes. When Elizabeth Fitzgerald, wife of Edmund Fitzgerald (the president and chairman of the board of Northwestern Mutual insurance company, and for whom the ship is named), tries to christen the ship by smashing a champagne bottle over the bow, it takes her three attempts to break it. A delay of 36 minutes follows while the shipyard crew struggles to release the keel blocks. Upon sideways launch, the ship creates a large wave that throws water over the spectators and then crashes into a pier before righting herself. One man watching the launching has a heart attack and later dies. (Other witnesses later said they swore the ship was "trying to climb right out of the water." On November 10, 1975, the ship sinks in Lake Superior during a storm, killing all 29 crew members.)
