In 1957, trading stamps are beginning their peak run of popularity in the U.S. that would last into the early 1970s. These stamps are being offered by nearly 250,000 retail outlets with the purchase of merchandise. Consumers then save the stamps until they have enough stamps to trade for merchandise offered at about 1,500 retail stores nationwide, and sometimes through catalogs as well. Among the roughly 200 trading-stamp companies in operation, some of the top trading stamp names are: S&H Green Stamps (by Sperry and Hutchinson), Top Value Stamps, Gold Bell Stamps, Gold Bond Stamps, Quality Stamps, Buccaneer Stamps, and Gold Strike Stamps. (In the 1950s and 1960s, more trading stamps are printed each year than the number of postage stamps printed.)

Patty Loveless is born Patricia Lee Ramey in Pikeville, Kentucky. She's a country music singer. Since emerging on the country music scene in late 1986 with her first (self-titled) album, Loveless has been one of the most popular female singers of neotraditional country. She also recorded albums in the country pop and bluegrass genres. She rose to stardom thanks to her blend of honky tonk and country-rock and a plaintive, emotional ballad style. Loveless has sold 15 million albums worldwide. Patty has charted more than 40 songs on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including five number ones: "Timber, I'm Falling in Love", "Chains", "Blame It on Your Heart", "You Can Feel Bad", and "Lonely Too Long". She has also released 16 studio albums; in the United States, four of these albums have been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and two have been certified gold. She has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1988. Loveless was married to Terry Lovelace, from whom she derived her professional name, from 1976 to 1986. This month, the Eastman Kodak Company introduces its Kodak Brownie Starflash camera. It's the first popular-priced consumer camera with a built-in flashbulb socket and flash reflector. It uses size 127 film and its exposed film negatives produce photographic prints that are 3.5 by 3.5 inches, or slides that are 2 by 2 inches. Each roll of film has 12 exposures. This $8.50 camera uses individual flashbulbs powered by two AA "penlight" batteries within the camera. A fresh (unused) flashbulb must be loaded into the camera's flashbulb socket for each flash photograph taken. The camera has fixed focus and two shutter speeds, one for black-and-white (V-127 Verichrome Pan film) and one for color (C-127 Kodacolor film). It has a neck strap and can be easily held while viewing through the viewfinder while taking a picture. Film advancing is manual, and manual rewinding of the film at the end of a roll is required. The Starflash cameras, available in black, white, red, or blue, sell in the millions, and they bring flash photography to many consumers for the first time. The camera is also sold as part of a set called Startech (including accessories) that is designed for closeup photography. The Starflash and Startech cameras are discontinued in June 1965 after Kodak's succeeding popular-priced model, the Instamatic, proves to be a big seller.
