The first detector for locating unlicensed television sets begins operation in the United Kingdom. The detector is mounted in a van that drives though neighborhoods to find unlicensed TV sets. (To comply with UK law, television owners there must obtain a TV license and pay an annual fee for each TV set owned.)

In South Africa, the Bantu Education Act goes into effect. It provides the legal basis for the practice of apartheid, especially in education.

Ernest Bloch's "Suite Hebraique," a musical piece for viola and piano, has its world premiere at the Covenant Club of Illinois in Chicago.

Hank Williams dies at age 29, in the back seat of his car while being driven to a concert date.  He dies during a trip from Bristol, Virginia, to Oak Hill, West Virginia. where the driver of his car stops for gasoline and discovers Williams dead. Hank was a singer, songwriter, and musician. Regarded as one of the most significant and influential American singers and songwriters of the 20th century, he recorded 35 singles (five released posthumously) that reached the top 10 of the Billboard Country & Western Best Sellers chart, including 11 that reached No. 1 (three posthumously).   He was born on September 17, 1923, in Mount Olive, Butler County, Alabama.

A fire breaks out in the Shofer's Furniture store on South Charles Street in Federal Hill, Baltimore, just before 2:30 AM. It becomes a 6-alarm blaze, but firefighters are able to put it out before it consumes the whole building. The store is gutted and thousands of dollars of inventory are lost in the blaze, but the Shofers would quickly rebuild their store in the same location where it would remain until early 2021, when the store closes for good.
