It's clear and 29 degrees F at the official Baltimore weather station (Friendship Airport, now BWI Marshall) as 1951 begins. The wind is from the northwest at 14 miles per hour.

By 1951, all telephone numbers in the Baltimore metropolitan area are converted to 7 digits. (They had been 6 digits since at least 1930.) A seventh digit is added after the second digit in each 6-digit phone number (reading from the left), so, for example, BRoadway 3422 becomes BRoadway 6-3422. The first two digits in a phone number continue to be represented by the first two letters of the alphabetic exchange name, so a number beginning with the exchange name BRoadway begins with the digits 27, as before (since the letter B appears with the 2 on a telephone dial and the letter R appears with the 7).

In the Korean War, there is a Chinese and North Korean assault on U. N. forces in North Korea.

RCA demonstrates its all-electonic color TV broadcasting and receiving system for the first time. It was broadcast over a TV station in New York, NY. Unlike the then-competing CBS color TV system which used synchronized rotating discs in both the color camera and TV receiver, the RCA color broadcast could also be viewed on existing black-and-white TVs (in black-and-white, of course). The RCA color system (with a few tweaks) would eventually become the U.S. standard for color TV broadcasts and color TV sets on December 17, 1953.
