Evergreen Park, Illinois resident James T. Mangan establishes the Nation of Celestial Space (or Celestia), a micronation that claims ownership of the entirety of outer space. (Mangan actively pursues claims of behalf of Celestia until his death in 1970.)

Max Azria is born in Sfax, Tunisia. He was a Tunisian-Jewish-born American fashion designer who founded the contemporary women's clothing brand BCBG MAX AZRIA. Azria was also the designer, chairman and CEO of the BCBG Max Azria Group, a global fashion house that encompassed over 20 brands. Azria left BCBG in 2016. BCBG Max Azria filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and was sold to Marquee Brands and Global Brands Group. Later Azria served as the CEO of ZappLight. He died at age 70 on May 6, 2019 in Houston, Texas.

William H. Lewis dies at age 80 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was one of the first African-American football players, playing at Amherst College and also playing football as a center at Harvard University while attending its Law School. After graduating, he coached Harvard football from 1895 to 1906, compiling a record of 114-15-5. Later, he became the first African-American United States Attorney. He was born on November 28, 1868 in Berkley, Virginia.

At Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington, a Douglas DC-3 airplane skids down an ice-coated runway until it strikes a hangar and bursts into flames, killing all 3 crew and 11 of the 27 passengers aboard. The chartered plane was for Yale University students returning to school from Christmas vacation.

The Vatican announces rejection of an offer from the Hungarian government to enter negotiations on the status of the Catholic Church in Hungary. Vatican officials make it known that the offer could not be considered as long as Cardinal József Mindszenty remains in jail.

The Battles of the Sinai in the Arab-Israeli War end when Israeli forces withdraw from the Sinai Peninsula.

Luis Muñoz Marín takes office as the first Governor of Puerto Rico.

Christopher Durang, a playwright, is born in Montclair, New Jersey.

Harold Grimwade dies at age 79 in Frankston, Victoria, Australia. He was an Australian businessman, pharmacist, and a major general in the Australian Army, serving in World War I. He was born on May 18, 1869 in St. Kilda, Victoria, Australia.

A coaxial cable linking New York television station WABD with Chicago television atation WGN is activated.  This allows the DuMont Television Network to be the first network to show live TV programs simultaneously on the East Coast and in the Midwest (and in places in between, such as Pittsburgh, Pa.) simultaneously.  The cable activation is carried on all four TV networks: NBC, CBS, ABC, and DuMont. Before this time each TV network relied on separate geographical networks to air live shows, meaning a separate performance was needed in each hub city (New York, Chicago, etc.).  In 1949, stations west of the Mississippi River still get their "live" TV shows via films made of the live shows and then shipped to the stations for airing.
