This year, the program "Dialing for Dollars" debuts on WMAR-TV (Channel 2) in Baltimore. It is simulcast with the audio portion of the show as broadcast on WCBM Radio in Baltimore. This show began on WCBM Radio in 1939 and eventually spread nationwide with many radio and/or TV markets having its own versions of the show. The Baltimore version was hosted first by Homer Todd on WCBM, then by Stu Kerr on WMAR & WCBM (from 1948 to about 1970), then by George Rogers until 1977, when the show ended for good in the Baltimore area. The host of the show (often with a sidekick) gives away money, usually $100 to $500, to people at residential phone numbers they randomly select from a metropolitan phone book, and who know two pieces of infomation: the "count" and the amount of money in the prize. When selecting the phone numbers, the staff first cut a city's metropolitan White Pages into columns, then snip the columns into unequal little strips. A strip is randomly drawn, and then a "count" (such as four from the top, or two from the bottom) is applied to the strip, to get the phone number to call. The host of the show says what the count and the amount are before making each phone call. The host on the Baltimore version then says, for example, while calling a 7-digit phone number for which no one answers: "There's the exchange, and now 5-9-7-5. There's the clickover and the first ring....ring number two.... [and then a count to 10 is made, regardless of rings] 0ne, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten. No luck at the home of Joe Jones in Catonsville." As another example, when a person answers: "Is this 800-5975, the home of Joe Jones? Mrs. Jones, are you listening to your radio or watching television this morning? What program, please? This is Mr. Fortune speaking on Dialing for Dollars, and if you had known our count and amount, we would have had $420 for you."  An example of a winner: "Is this 800-5975, the home of Joe Jones? Mrs. Jones, are you listening to your radio or watching teleision tis morning? [The person says they're watching Dialing for Dollars.] Good! May I have the count and amout? 420 dollars, 4 from the top. That's right, Mrs. Jones. Congratulations, you just won $420." By the time Dialing for Dollars ended in Baltimore in 1977, it had given away $800,000 to local TV viewers and radio listeners in its 38 years on radio and TV.

By this date, a cable television system is operating in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. It consists of a receiving antenna on top of the Broad Mountain ridge, aimed toward Philadelphia TV stations, and connected via coaxial cable to TV sets in homes and businesses in Mahanoy City. Without the cable system, TV reception in Mahanoy City is poor or impossible with set-top antennas alone, because of the high mountain ridge blocking TV signals between it and Philadelphia. At least two other cable-TV systems begin operating in 1948, in Arkansas and in Oregon, and it cannot be proved which was the first cable TV system to begin operation.

Carole Landis dies at age 29 in Los Angeles, CA, of a barbiturate overdose that is ruled a suicide. She was an actress, known for film roles in One Million B.C. and Moon Over Miami. During World War II,  Landis traveled more than 100,000 miles and spent more time visiting troops than any other actress. Landis wrote several newspaper and magazine articles about her experiences during the war, including the 1944 book Four Jills in a Jeep, which was later made into a movie costarring Kay Francis, Martha Raye, and Mitzi Mayfair. In 1945 she starred on Broadway in the musical A Lady Says Yes, with future novelist Jacqueline Susann in a small role. Susann is said to have based the character of Jennifer North, from her best-selling novel Valley of the Dolls, in part on Landis. Carole Landis was born Frances Lillian Mary Ridsteon January 1, 1919  in Fairchild, Wisconsin.
