Japan's Emperor Hirohito surprises his subjects with the news that he is not descended from the Shinto Sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, and that "The Emperor is not a living god". He adds that his people hve to "proceed unflinchingly toward elimination of misguided practices of the past", including "the false conception that the Emperor is divine and that the Japanese people are superior to other races and fated to rule the world". The admission is published in newspapers throughout Japan.

Rick Hurst is born Richard Douglas Hurst in Houston, Texas. He is an actor who portrayed Deputy Cletus Hogg, Boss Hogg's cousin, in the 1980 to 1983 seasons of The Dukes of Hazzard as well as The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! in 1997 and The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood in 2000. He also starred as Earl, the chef in the short-lived Bea Arthur series Amanda's. He appeared in many movies, including The Karate Kid Part III (1989) as the Announcer. He makes numerous appearances at various Dukes of Hazzard events and at Cooters in Nashville and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. He also has made appearances at The World Of Wheels in Birmingham, Alabama.

In León, Mexico, federal troops, called in by the Governor of the State of Guanajuato, fire into a crowd of demonstrators, killing at least 40 people.

John Paul Jones is born John Richard Baldwin in Sidcup, Kent, England. He's an English musician, composer, and record producer who was the bassist and keyboardist for the rock band Led Zeppelin. Prior to forming the band with Jimmy Page in 1968, he was a session musician and arranger. After the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, Led Zeppelin disbanded, and Jones developed a solo career. He has collaborated with musicians across a variety of genres, including Josh Homme and Dave Grohl with the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures.

After Divine tissues are no longer made, this slogan is used in advertising Inver House scotch whiskey.  He is called Rabbit because he runs fast, and he finishes as high as ninth in the Boston Marathon.

In Athens, Alabama, a mob of white men and teenagers, estimated at 2,000 people, riot after two white men had been jailed for an unprovoked attack on a black man the day before. Breaking into smaller groups, the mob goes into town and began beating any African-American seen the street. State troops, sent by the Governor, arrive at 4:00 pm and restore order by midnight. Nobody is killed, but more than 50 black persons are injured. (Sixteen white suspects are later indicted by a county grand jury for the violence.)

Marilyn vos Savant is born Marilyn Ann Mach in St. Louis, Missouri. She becomes widely known when Parade magazine publishes a cover story about her on June 22, 1986.  Known for her extremely high intelligence (an IQ of 228), she writes the weekly "Ask Marilyn" question-and-answer column for Parade magazine, and has also written about a dozen books. Meteorologist Vincent Schaefer, a researcher for the General Electric company, makes the first successful test of cloud seeding as a means of weather control. Taking off in an airplane from Schenectady, New York, Schaefer drops six pounds of dry ice pellets into the clouds at 14,000 feet over Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Within two minutes, snow flakes begin falling. The snow didn't reach the town below, evaporating at about 11,000 feet, but Schaefer, who had earlier discovered a laboratory process for artificially making snow, demonstrates that the process can be duplicated on a large scale.

Wanda Coleman, an African American author and poet, is born in Los Angeles, California. She was known as "the L.A. Blueswoman" and "the unofficial poet laureate of Los Angeles." She died at age 67 on November 22, 2013, also in Los Angeles.
