American soldiers retaliate for the Malmedy massacre by killing German prisoners of war near the village of Chenogne, Belgium.

Britain refuses to recognize the Polish Committee of National Liberation.

German radio broadcasts a New Year's Day address by Adolf Hitler. The 26-minute speech offers no information on the battlefield situation or any hint that the war is nearing its end, only a declaration that the war would continue until victory is won. The foreign media speculate as to whether the speech is live or pre-recorded, and even whether it is Hitler's voice at all.

RAF (Royal Air Force) bombers conduct heavy raids on Nuremberg and Ludwigshafen; in both cities over 2,300 tons of bombs are dropped. Some ninety percent of Nuremberg's old medieval town center is destroyed.

A U.S. bombardment fleet bound for invasion beaches on Luzon, The Philippines,  leaves Leyte, The Philippines, with a force including six battleships, twelve escort carriers and thirty-nine destroyers.

Stephen Stills is born in Dallas, Texas. He's a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist best known for his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. As both a solo act and member of two successful bands, Stills has combined record sales of over 35 million albums. He was ranked number 28 in Rolling Stone's 2003 list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and number 47 in the 2011 list. Stills became the first person to be inducted twice on the same night into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Bob Marley is born Robert Nesta Marley in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Colony of Jamaica.  He bacame a singer, songwriter, and musician. Considered one of the pioneers of reggae, his musical career was marked by fusing elements of reggae, ska, and rocksteady, as well as his distinctive vocal and songwriting style. Marley's contributions to music increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide, and made him a global figure in popular culture for over a decade. Over the course of his career Marley became known as a Rastafari icon, and he infused his music with a sense of spirituality. He is also considered a global symbol of Jamaican music and culture and identity, and was controversial in his outspoken support for the legalization of marijuana, while he also advocated for Pan-Africanism.

Billboard magazine ("The Billboard") publishes its first record-album chart.  The #1 album is "The King Cole Trio" by The King Cole Trio, a group led by Nat King Cole.  Record albums are several 78-rpm records in paper sleeves, bound with hard covers into a book-like confguration and sold as a single unit.  The name "album" carries over to the 1948 introduction of the long-play (LP) 33-1/3 rpm record, which contains as many songs (or more) as a 78-rpm album but is packaged in a single cardboard sleeve.
