Joe Nuxhall of the Cincinnati Reds becomes the youngest person ever to play in a Major League Baseball game, at 15 years, 316 days. He pitches two-thirds of an inning in the Reds' 18-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. He retires two of the first three batters he faces, then the next six batters reach base against him. Joe walks five batters, three of them with the bases loaded. He also gives up two singles and allows five runs to score. (But he does much better later in his career, eventually winning 135 games.) In this game, pitcher Jake Eisenhart relieves Joe Nuxhall and gets the final out of the inning. It is Jake Eisenhart's first, and last, major-league appearance.

About 4:00 in the morning, a fire begins at old Oriole Park and completely destroys the ballpark. The Orioles are forced to use Memorial Stadium, a venue built in 1922 originally for football, but the field and other items had to be rehabilitated, replaced or installed, which took about two weeks. Meanwhile, the Orioles are forced to go on the road to play games that were originally scheduled for their home ballpark.

Jul. 6, 1944 At least 167 people die and more than 700 people are injured when a fire erupts in the main tent of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Hartford, Connecticut. The matinee performance was attended by 6,000 to 8,000 people.

The fire begins as a small flame after the lions' performance, on the southwest sidewall of the tent, while the Great Wallendas are performing. Circus bandleader Merle Evans is said to have been the first to spot the flame, and immediately directs the band to play "The Stars and Stripes Forever", the tune that traditionally signals distress to all circus personnel. Ringmaster Fred Bradna urges the audience not to panic and to leave in an orderly fashion, but the power fails and he cannot be heard by most of the audience. Bradna and the ushers unsuccessfully try to maintain some order as the panicked crowd tries to flee the big top. Because of paraffin wax coating the tent's fabric to waterproof it, the fire spreads quickly, helped by the wind, until flames engulf the whole tent. Many people are burned by melting paraffin wax, raining down from the roof.

The only animals in the big top at the time were the big cats trained by May Kovar and Joseph Walsh that had just finished performing when the fire started. The big cats are herded through the chutes leading from the performing cages to several cage wagons, and are unharmed except for a few minor burns. Though most spectators are able to escape the fire, many people are caught up in the hysteria. Witnesses said some simply ran around in circles trying to find their loved ones, rather than trying to escape from the burning tent. Some escaped but ran back inside to look for family members. Others stayed in their seats until it was too late, assuming that the fire would be put out promptly. Because at least two of the exits are blocked by the chutes used to bring the show's big cats in and out of the tent, people trying to escape cannot bypass them. The flaming tent collapses about eight minutes after the fire was first detected. Hundreds of spectators are trapped. The cause of the fire has never been determined. Theories range from a carelessly-flicked cigarette to arson.
