The Georgia Bulldogs defeat the UCLA Bruins, 9-0, in the Rose Bowl before a crowd of 93,000 as the postseason college football game returned to Pasadena, California. Georgia had been ranked #2 in the final Associated Press poll, while #1 Ohio State did not play in a bowl game.

In 1943, postal zones are introduced in U.S. cities that have more than one post office. (Boston and a few other large cities had postal zones as early as 1920.) In Baltimore and its close-in suburbs, the (original) postal zones run from 1 to 31, consecutively. Some of the Baltimore-area postal zones are all or mostly suburban: 4 is Towson; 7 is Woodlawn/Gwynn Oak; 20 is Middle River; 21 is Essex; 22 is Dundalk; 28 is Catonsville; etc. As an example, a typical city-and-state line in an address for someone in Baltimore zone 31 is "Baltimore 31, Md."

The Soviet Union announces that 22 German divisions in Stalingrad had been encircled by the Red Army, and that 175,000 of the enemy had been killed and 137,650 captured.

He is best known for his work on NBC's Saturday Night Live from 1978 to 1980, and again from 1985 to 1986, often as the character Father Guido Sarducci. He appeared as Sarducci in many subsequent television shows, including Married... with Children, Blossom, It's Garry Shandling's Show, Unhappily Ever After, Square Pegs, and The Colbert Report, and in the 1980 documentary film Gilda Live. In 1943, Mr. Ragan M. Doub buys 333 acres of land along the north side of Johnnycake Road that had once been owned by Elias A. Blackshere (1846-1908), a prominent livestock raiser who was also a major homebuilder in Baltimore and in its northern and western suburbs. [In the 1890s and 1900s (decade), Mr. Blackshere raised thousands of beef cattle and sheep on this land. The parcel was subdivided beginning in the 1960s and became home to Johnnycake Junior High School (later called Southwest Academy), Baltimore County's Westview Fire Station #13, Westview Place housing development, Walden Circle townhouse apartments, Discovery Acres apartments, and a Social Security Administration building (at 1500 Woodlawn Drive). Also, Woodlawn Drive from Johnnycake Road to beyond the Interstate 70 overpass was built on part of this land, as were sections of I-70 and I-695 Baltimore Beltway. The interchange for Interstates 70 and 695 also sits on part of this original 333-acre parcel.]

In the Battle of Buna–Gona, American and Australian forces, under the command of U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Robert L. Eichelberger, are able to capture the New Guinea beachhead at Buna from the Japanese, after the Australian Army had captured Gona on December 9. (The Allied victory left only one remaining Japanese stronghold on New Guinea, Sanananda, which would fall two weeks later.
General Douglas MacArthur had given Eichelberger the order to "Take Buna, or don't come back alive", which one biographer would describe later as "the absolute nadir of [MacArthur's] generalship.")

The Battle of Gjorm ended in decisive victory for the Albanian Resistance fighters.

George Washington Carver dies at age 78 or 79 in Tuskegee, Alabama. He was an agricultural scientist and inventor who promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion. He was the most prominent Black scientist of the early 20th century. While a professor at Tuskegee Institute, Carver developed techniques to improve soils depleted by repeated plantings of cotton. He wanted poor farmers to grow other crops, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes, as a source of their own food and to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes using peanuts. Although he spent years developing and promoting numerous products made from peanuts, none became commercially successful. Apart from his work to improve the lives of farmers, Carver was also a leader in promoting environmentalism. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP. He was born into slavery in Diamond, Missouri, in about 1864.
