Dennis Hastert is born John Dennis Hastert in Aurora, Illinois. He is a former politician and admitted sex offender who represented Illinois' 14th congressional district from 1987 to 2007 and served as the 51st Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007. The longest-serving Republican Speaker of the House in history, after the Democrats gained a majority in the House, he resigned and began to work as a lobbyist.

Charlie Rose is born Charles Peete Rose Jr. in Henderson, North Carolina. He's a former television journalist and talk show host. From 1991 to 2017, he was the host and executive producer of the talk show Charlie Rose on PBS and Bloomberg LP. Rose also co-anchored CBS This Morning from 2012 to 2017 alongside Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell. Rose formerly substituted for the anchor of the CBS Evening News. Rose, along with Lara Logan, hosted the revived CBS classic Person to Person, a news program during which celebrities are interviewed in their homes, originally hosted from 1953 to 1961 by Edward R. Murrow. In November 2017, Rose was fired from CBS and PBS after The Washington Post published multiple in-house allegations of sexual harassment dating back to the late 1990s through 2011. His eponymous show, Charlie Rose, on PBS was cancelled.

Muhammad Ali is born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. in Louisville, Kentucky. He becomes a professional boxer, activist, entertainer, poet and philanthropist. Nicknamed The Greatest, he is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sports and cultural figures of the 20th century. He is frequently ranked as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. He died at age 74 in June 3, 2016 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Huey P. Newton is born Huey Percy Newton in Monroe, Louisiana. He became an African-American revolutionary, most known for co-founding the Black Panther Party (BPP) with Bobby Seale. Together, Newton and Seale created the party's manifesto, the ten-point program. Under Newton's leadership, the Black Panther Party founded over 60 community support programs (renamed survival programs in 1971) including food banks, medical clinics, sickle cell anemia tests, prison busing for families of inmates, legal advice seminars, clothing banks, housing cooperatives, and their own ambulance service. The most famous of these programs was the Free Breakfast for Children program which fed thousands of impoverished children daily during the early 1970s. Newton also co-founded the Black Panther newspaper service which became one of America's most widely distributed African-American newspapers. He was shot to death at age 47 in Oakland, California, on August 22, 1989.

The first shelling of the U.S. mainland during World War II occurs. An Imperial Japanese Navy submarine named the I-17 fires on an oil refinery at Ellwood, near Santa Barbara, California. The Japanese shells destroy a derrick and a pump house, while also minimally damaging the Ellwood Pier and a catwalk.

A charter passenger ship, the SS Struma, is torpedoed by a Soviet submarine in the Black Sea. The ship was carrying nearly 800 Jewish refugees from Romania and was bound for British-mandated Palestine. There is only one survivor.

Joe Lieberman is born Joseph Isadore Lieberman in Stamford, Connecticut. He became a politician and lawyer who served as a United States senator from Connecticut from 1989 to 2013. A former member of the Democratic Party, he was its nominee for vice president of the United States in the 2000 U.S. presidential election. During his final term in office, he was officially listed as an independent Democrat and caucused with and chaired committees for the Democratic Party. He died at age 82 on March 27, 2024 in New York, NY.

Michael Nesmith is born Robert Michael Nesmith in Houston, Texas. He was a musician, songwriter, actor, producer, and novelist. He was best known as a member of the pop rock band the Monkees and co-star of the TV series The Monkees (1966–1968). Nesmith's songwriting credits include "Different Drum," which became a hit for Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys. After the breakup of the Monkees, Nesmith continued his successful songwriting and performing career, first with the seminal country rock group the First National Band, with whom he had a top-40 hit, "Joanne," and then as a solo artist. He played a 12-string guitar, performing on a custom-built Gretsch electric during his time with the Monkees and various 12-string acoustic models during his post-Monkees career.  He was also an executive producer of the film Repo Man (1984). In 1981, Nesmith won the first Grammy Award given for Video of the Year for his hour-long television show, Elephant Parts. He died at age 78 on December 10, 2021 in Carmel Valley, California.
