(The boycott will last ten months, during which time American radio stations play only songs that are in the public domain or licensed by ASCAP's rival BMI [Broadcast Music, Inc.].  As a result, songs such as "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," written by Stephen Foster in 1854, enjoy unprecedented success.)

Following a hockey game between the Chicago Black Hawks and Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Stadium, Jimmy Orlando of the Red Wings exchanges harsh words with a spectator in the stands, then throws a punch over the rail that knocks the fan unconscious. Hundreds of angry fans surge onto the ice and some try to go after Orlando, but ushers hold them back. By the time police arrive to arrest Orlando, he is nowhere to be found.

She becomes best known for her role as Lucille Bluth on the sitcom Arrested Development, and for providing the voice of Malory Archer on the long-running FX animated series Archer. She won an Emmy for Best Actress in a Limited Series for her title role in the 3-episode 1975 TV series "Amy Prentiss." Jessica died at age 80 on March 24, 2021, in Brooklyn, New York, NY.

Baltimore AM radio station WITH goes on the air, initially operating on a frequency of 1200 KHz and power of 250 watts both day and night. On this day, the station broadcasts a performance from the Maryland Theater featuring the songs of seven songwriters belonging to ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers).  (On March 29, 1941, the station moves to 1230 KHz on the dial. In 2006, WITH changes its call letters to WRBS.)

FM radio station W47NV goes on the air in Nashville, Tennessee. It becomes the first fully licensed FM radio station. (It later changes its call letters to WSM-FM, but then it ceases operations on March 15, 1951.)

Ritchie Valens is born Richard Steven Valenzuela in Pacoima, Los Angeles, California. He would become a rock-and-roll singer, songwriter, and guitarist, best known for his hit songs "Donna" and "La Bamba." He was also a forefather of the Chicano rock movement. Ritchie Valens was killed on February 3, 1959 at age 17 along with fellow rock-and-roll stars Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa.

Early in the morning by surprise, Japanese fighter planes attack U.S. Navy ships docked at the naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  A total of 2,402 Americans are killed and 1,282 wounded.  Four U.S. battleships are sunk and four more damaged, and also sunk or damaged are three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minesweeper.  Also, 188 U.S. aircraft are destroyed.  The Japanese have 65 servicemen killed or wounded.  This day will come to be known as Pearl Harbor Day.

Ray Thomas is born Raymond Thomas in Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, England.  He becomes a multi-instrumentalist, singer, founding member and composer in the English progressive rock band the Moody Blues. His flute solo on the band's 1967 hit single "Nights in White Satin" is regarded as one of progressive rock's defining moments. In 2018, he is posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Moody Blues. He died at age 76 on January 4, 2018 in Surrey, England.
