In World War II, the city of Coventry, England, is bombed by the Luftwaffe (German air force) in the most devastating of a series of attacks that come to be known as the Coventry Blitz. There are 515 German planes taking part in the operation. The attack on the city of 238,000 people begins in the evening and continues into the next morning. The initial wave of 13 specially modified Heinkel He 111 aircraft of Kampfgruppe 100, which were equipped with X-Gerät navigational devices, accurately drop marker flares at 7:20 PM. The British and the Germans were fighting the Battle of the Beams and on this night the British failed to disrupt the X-Gerät signals.

The first wave of follow-up bombers drop high explosive bombs, knocking out the utilities (the water supply, electricity network, telephones and gas mains) and cratering the roads, making it difficult for the fire engines to reach fires started by the later waves of bombers. These later waves drop a combination of high explosive and incendiary bombs. There are two types of incendiary bomb: Those made of magnesium and those made of petroleum. The high explosive bombs and the larger air-mines not only hinder the Coventry fire brigade, they are also intended to damage roofs, making it easier for the incendiary bombs to fall into buildings and ignite them.  An estimated 563 people are killed in the bombings, and more than 1,000 people are injured. More than 4,300 homes in Coventry are destroyed and only about one-third of the city's buildings are left undamaged. The center of the city is nearly all destroyed.
