In the 1937 Major League Baseball All Star Game, the American League defeats the National League, 8-3.  Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees hits a home run and a double and drives in four runs for the American League. Joe Medwick of the St. Louis Cardinals has four base hits, including two doubles, for the National League. The game is played at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. and the attendance is 31,391. In this game, batter Earl Averill of the Cleveland Indians hits a line drive that hits St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dizzy Dean on the big toe of his left foot, fracturing the toe. (Dean would come back too soon from this injury, altering his mechanics to avoid landing too hard on the healing toe, and in the process hurting his pitching arm.)
