Ellicott City is disincorporated after being a city since 1867. The city's revenue from alcoholic-beverage taxes and saloon fees ceased after Prohibition took effect in 1920, so the city shifted these taxes to residents. The Great Depression lowered the city's tax revenues, as some residents lost their jobs or experienced reductions in income; residents revolted against taxes they were asked to pay. Even though Prohibition ended in 1933 and alcoholic-beverage tax revenue resumed, Ellicott City no longer had enough revenue to run itself. So it disincorporated, and all municipal services within the former city were subsumed by Howard County, Maryand.

Cal Ripken Sr. is born Calvin Edwin Ripken 3 miles south of Aberdeen, Maryland, in a general store his parents own. He became a minor-league baseball player, coach, and manager, and then coach and manager of the major-league Orioles. While at Aberdeen High School he played catcher and helped the baseball team win three Harford County championships, including an undefeated season in 1952. He played catcher in the minor leagues in the Orioles organization from 1957 to 1964. He managed various minor-league teams in the Orioles' organization from 1961 to 1970. He was the bullpen coach for the major-league Orioles from 1976 through part of 1977, and third-base coach for the Orioles from 1977 through 1986. He managed the Orioles for one game on June 14, 1985, as the Orioles defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 8-3. He managed the Orioles full-time in 1987 and for the first 6 games of 1988, during which time he managed two of his sons, Cal Ripken Jr. and Billy Ripken, the first time that a father had ever managed two sons at the same time in major-league history. After the Orioles started the 1988 season 0-6, he was fired as manager (and ultimately the Orioles started the season 0-21) -- the fastest firing of a field manager in major-league history. He was again the Orioles' third-base coach from 1989 through 1992. He died at age 63 in March 25, 1999, in Aberdeen, Maryland.
