In the 1934 Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena, California, the Columbia Lions (7-1) defeat the Stanford Indians (8-1-1) by a score of 7 to 0.

Flooding and mudslides in Montrose, California and vicinity cause death and destruction. More than 400 homes are destroyed in La Cañada, La Crescenta, Montrose and Tujunga. Scores of people are killed (at least 45 in Montrose alone), and hundreds are left homeless. Entire families are wiped out. The mudslides that begin in the mountains above La Cañada and La Crescenta carve a path of destruction all the way to the Verdugo Wash and beyond.

Hickman portrayed Chuck MacDonald, Bob Collins' girl-crazy teenaged nephew, in the 1950s TV sitcom The Bob Cummings Show (first-run episodes from 1955 to 1959) and the title character in the 1960s sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (first-run episodes from 1959 to 1963). He was the younger brother of actor Darryl Hickman, with whom he has appeared on screen. In retirement, he devoted his time to painting. He died at age 87 on January 9, 2022, also in Los Angeles.
