At the Bath Consolidated School in Bath Township, Michigan, timed explosives kill 38 elementary schoolchildren and six adults, and wound another 58 people. Prior to the school explosion, the perpetrator had killed his wife and firebombed his farmstead. He was a 55-year-old school board treasurer who was unhappy with increasing taxes and his defeat in an April 5, 1926, election for township clerk. He was also unhappy about receiving a notice that his mortgage was being foreclosed upon. For much of the next year he bought explosives, secretly hiding them under his property and under the school. After killing his wife and firebombing his farm, he drove to the scene of the school explosion, then killed himself by detonating explosives in his schrapnel-filled truck. The truck explosion also killed four other people and wounded some others. Rescue and recovery searchers found 500 pounds of unexploded dynamite and pyrotol in the south wing of the school; this dynamite had been set to go off at the same time as the disastrous north-wing explosion, but it was removed from the building without incident.

Dorothy "Dottie" Alice Lentz is born in Newark, Ohio, the youngest of six children. She grows up in Newark and begins work at age 15 as a cashier at a local bakery named Omar's. Later she works in Newark as a secretary at the headquarters of Moore's, a regional chain of department stores. She meets Nicholas "Nick" Stratton, a native of Weirton, West Virginia, in November 1945 and they marry in August 1949, at which time she becomes Dorothy "Dottie" Stratton. The couple move to Chicago where Dottie works as a secretary for a couple of companies, while Nick works for Kemper Insurance and Advance Transformer Company. She and Nick then move to Detroit in 1952 and then to Plymouth, Michigan, in 1955. Dottie works as a secretary for Nash-Kelvinator and then for The Flintkote Company, while Nick works at Beacon Falls Rubber Footwear and later at a U.S. Social Security Administration field office. Dottie quits her Flintkote job while pregnant with her and Nick's first child, a boy, born in October 1956. Dottie and Nick have a second child, a girl, in December 1958. When Nick gets promoted in his job at Social Security, the family move to Baltimore, Maryland, in May 1959 and then to the Westview Park neighborhood in Catonsville, Maryland, in May 1960. Dottie stays at home with Nick's and her children (when they're not in school) while Nick continues his job at the headquarters of the Social Security Administration. Dottie begins a decades-long involvement in bridge (card game) clubs, meeting weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays with other women, with each woman in the clubs taking turns hosting the card games at their respective homes. She also enjoys sewing, making clothing for herself, her daughter, and sometimes for her husband and son. She is also fond of shopping, cooking, baking, travel, reading books (mainly mysteries), reading newspapers, reading magazines, and watching movies and television. Dottie Stratton died at age 90 on April 9, 2018, in Towson, Maryland, while being in rehabilitation following a fall at home.
