| Jan. 1, 1925 | In the 11th Rose Bowl, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeat Stanford University, 27 to 10. Norway's capital Christiania is renamed Oslo. A small contingent of U.S. Marines arrives at Nanjing, China, to patrol the vicinity of the university and protect Americans there from further looting. Costa Rica decides to withdraw from the League of Nations over the League's failure to address regional disputes. The states of Aleppo and Damascusaere unite into the State of Syria. The Florida land boom continues, with land purchasing and building construction reaching a speculative frenzy, and prices rapidly increasing. Local billboards and newspapers in Florida are chock-full of ads for real estate. However, the cost of living in Florida is skyrocketing and there begins to be negative press from outsiders (such as the New York newspapers) that land and real-estate prices are too high to be sustainable. This year, the first photo booth is installed, on Broadway in New York, NY. For 25 cents, it takes and automatically develops ten photographs, all in about ten minutes. Its camera has fixed focus and automatic flash. Each photo is a portrait photo of one person who sits on a seat inside the booth (or perhaps two people or more, such as a parent with young children on his or her lap). An interval of about 15 seconds between snapshots allows a person to exit and another person to enter the booth, if desired. Photographs are developed by the booth's machine and delivered to the customer automatically. (The automatic photography machine, which the booth incorporates, was invented in 1888 by William Pope and Edward Poole of Baltimore.) Later versions of photo booths often produce strips of four photos, a common photo size being 1-3/8 inches by 2 inches. Color booth photos are introduced by the late 1970s, and digital photo booths (with a wide range of digital modifications available for each photo) after 2000. She was best-known in later years for starring in the TV series "Murder, She Wrote" (1984-1996). She died at age 96 on October 11, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. At the height of his popularity, it was published nationwide as a syndicated column in more than 500 newspapers. His column focused on political satire and commentary. He died at age 81 on January 17, 2007, in Washington, D.C. Tom Dowd is born Thomas John Dowd in Manhattan, New York, NY. He was a recording engineer and producer for Atlantic Records from Atlantic's founding in 1947 until the year of his death: 2002. He is credited with innovating the multitrack recording method, and was among the first to record music in stereo. Dowd worked on a veritable "who's who" of recordings that encompassed blues, jazz, pop, rock, and soul records. He died at age 77 on October 27, 2002, in Aventura, Florida. | Dec. 2, 1925 | Strong winds reach 33 miles an hour at the official Baltimore weather station at the Customs House. However, areas near the water and elsewhere have even stronger winds. So strong is the wind in Baltimore that it hurls an automobile against an electric light standard on the Hanover Street bridge in the evening, snapping the standard and damaging the automobile badly. The automobile was being driven north over the bridge by a Baltimore man. A 32-year-old Chesaco Park man is hit by a shutter torn by the wind from a dwelling in the 600 block West Fayette street. He is bruised on his back and has to be taken to University Hospital for treatment. Winds reach a maximum of 48 mph at Cape Henry in Virginia Beach; some Cheaspeake Bay coastal areas also have gale-force winds. This storm is the same one that hit Florida as a hurricane the previous day.
