This is Census Day in 1920. The population of the United States is 106,021,537 -- an increase of 14.96 percent since 1910. The population of Maryland is 1,499,661 -- an increase of 15.77 percent since 1910. The population of Baltimore (city) is 733,826 -- an increase of 31.4 percent since 1910; a large part of the increase is due to Baltimore city's 1918-1919 annexing of parts of Baltimore County and Anne Arundel County. The population of Baltimore County is 74,817 -- a decrease of 38.8 percent since 1910; the decrease is solely due to Baltimore city's annexing of part of Baltimore County in 1918-1919. The population of Catonsville is estimated to be 4,500 which is nearly double its population in 1910.

Harvard University narrowly defeats the University of Oregon, 7 to 6, in the Tournament of Roses East-West Football Game held at Pasadena, California, between the two teams chosen by the tournament committee as the best in the eastern and western United States.  All of the scoring comes in the second quarter, on a field goal by Oregon's Bill Steers, a 13-yard touchdown run by Fred Church and Arnold Horween's extra point kick for Harvard, and another field goal by Clifford "Skeet" Manerud. In the final minutes of the game, two Oregon field goal tries by Steers are blocked, and a final try by Manerud from the 20 yard line misses by a few inches. Harvard, then an independent, was undefeated and went into the game with an 8-0-1 record; it had outscored its opponents 229 to 19 in the 1919 college football season. Oregon had a 5-1-0 record in the Pacific Coast Conference, and had given the other 5-1-0 team, the University of Washington, its only loss. The event, which is now called the Rose Bowl, was the only post-season college football game at the time.

Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians is struck in the head by a pitch thrown by Carl Mays during a game against the New York Yankees at the Polo Grounds in the Bronx, New York, NY. At the time, batters did not wear batting helmets, and pitchers commonly dirtied balls with soil, licorice, and tobacco juice, and scuffed, sandpapered, scarred, cut, or spiked them, giving a "misshapen, earth-colored ball that traveled through the air erratically, tended to soften in the later innings, and, as it came over the plate, was very hard to see." Mays throws with a submarine delivery, and it is late afternoon. Eyewitnesses recounted that Chapman did not react to the pitch at all, presumably unable to see it. The sound of the ball striking Chapman's skull is so loud that Mays thinks it had hit the end of Chapman's bat; he fields the ball and throws to first base.

Home plate umpire Tommy Connolly, noticing that Chapman is bleeding from his left ear, screams towards the stands for a doctor. Tris Speaker, who had been on deck, rushes to Chapman, as does several players from each team. Carl Mays merely stands on the mound. Chapman tries to walk, but his knees buckle. As he is helped off the field by his teammates, he mumbles "I'm all right; tell Mays not to worry... ring....Katie's ring," before falling unconscious. Chapman is taken to St. Lawrence Hospital, a short distance from the Polo Grounds.

A bombing occurs at 12:01 PM in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York, NY. A horse-drawn wagon loaded with 100 pounds of dynamite with 500 pounds of cast-iron sash weights, stops across the street from the J.P Morgan & Co. bank at 23 Wall Street, at the Financial District's busiest corner.  The dynamite is set to explode by a timer, which it does, reducing the wagon to small fragments. The wagon's driver is believed to have escaped before the explosion occurred. The blast kills thirty people immediately, and another ten die later of wounds sustained in the blast. There are 143 seriously injured, and the total number of injured is in the hundreds. The bombing was never solved, although investigators and historians believe it was carried out by Gallianists (Italian anarchists), a group responsible for a series of bombings the previous year. The attack was related to postwar social unrest, labor struggles, and anti-capitalist agitation in the United States.
