American troops fight their first major battle and offensive during World War I, the Battle of Cantigny. The U.S. 1st Division, the most experienced of the five American divisions then in France and in reserve for the French Army near the village of Cantigny, is selected for the attack.  The Americans reduce a small salient (section of fortification) made by the German Army in the front lines and expand their (Americans') front by approximately a mile. A minor success, its significance is overshadowed by the battle underway along the Aisne (river). The U.S. forces hold their position with 1,603 men killed or wounded, including 199 killed in action;  they capture 250 German prisoners. Matthew B. Juan, an American Indian, is killed during this battle.
