Popular British novelist and wartime propagandist Hall Caine is made an Order of the British Empire. | Jan. 21, 1918 | Richard "Dick" Winters is born in New Holland, PA. He becomes an officer of the U.S. Army and a decorated war veteran. He is best known for having commanded Easy Company of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division, during World War II. He was eventually promoted to major and put in command of the 2nd Battalion. Later, a book "Band of Brothers" was published about his expeiences in the Army, and a TV miniseries of the same title was based on it. He died at age 92 on January 2, 2011, in Hershey, PA.
