Paul is playing in the rear of his home when Paul's mother hears him scream, then is horrified to see the big bird tugging at the little boy's clothing. However, the boy is too heavy for the bird, which succeeds in lifting him only about two feet off the ground before dropping him. Mrs. Zebley tries to strike the bald eagle with a "stout club" but the bird dodges the blows. After making several lunges at the woman, the bird flies away. Mr. Zebley, who had arrived with his shotgun, fires at the bird, but misses.
