The Rhoads Opera House fire in Boyertown, Pennsylvania kills 171 people. A play being performed there that night is called The Scottish Reformation, written by Harriet Earhart Monroe, who was heavily involved in the production. The fire starts when a kerosene lamp being used for stage lighting is knocked over, starting a fire on the stage. In short order, the spreading fire ignites a mixture of lighting gas and oxygen from a malfunctioning stereopticon machine being used to present a magic lantern (slide) show at intermission. Audience members wait for the fire to be extinguished by theater personnel, wasting the precious minutes they need to escape safely. Of the approximately 400 men, women, and children either in attendance or associated with the performance of the play, 171 perish in various ways as they try to escape the conflagration. In the panic to escape, many are crushed in the narrow main entrance stairway, as well as against the jammed main exit swinging doors of the second floor auditorium. In a few instances, entire families are wiped out. One firefighter, John Graver, also dies while responding to the incident.

At 3:30 PM, new electric-power-generating equipment is put into operation for the first time at Bloede's Dam on the Patapsco River near Catonsville. The dam was named for Victor G. Bloede who designed and built it with a company called Patapsco Electric and Manufacturing, of Ellicott City. The equipment is activated by Mr. Bloede's daughter, Vida Bloede, as about 500 dignitaries and guests look on. They are served waffles from electric waffle makers.  This new equipment comprises the world's first submerged hydroelectic plant and it supplies electricity to Catonsville, Ellicott City, and Ilchester.  (See December 31, 1906: Avalon Water Works)
