Feb. 7, 1904

The Great Baltimore Fire begins. More than 1,500 buildings are completely leveled, and some 1,000 severely damaged, bringing property loss from the disaster to an estimated $100 million. The fire destroys most of central Baltimore, covering an area of about 140 acres. The fire is first discovered at 10:48 in the morning in the John Hurst and Company building at West German (now Redwood) Street and Hopkins Place, the southwest corner of the site of the later Baltimore Civic Center/Royal Farms Arena, in the western part of downtown. The fire quickly spreads eastward, aided by strong southwesterly winds. Fire companies from Baltimore and much of the rest of Maryland respond, as do companies from Washington DC, Philadelphia and elsewhere via the railroads. Many of the hoses of outside fire departments do not fit Baltimore's fire hydrants, slowing the progress of extinguishing the fire. The Jones Falls (stream) acts as a barrier to the fire's further eastward spread, sparing the areas of Baltimore east of the falls. Most sources indicate that there were no deaths caused by the fire; others indicate that one to as many as five people died in it.

By 5:00 p.m., 1,526 buildings housing 2,500 businesses are destroyed, putting 35,000 people out of work and causing a reported $150 million in damage, which equates to over $4 billion in 2018 U.S. dollars.

The high temperature in Baltimore reaches 64 degrees F which is the highest-ever temperature in Baltimore on any February 7th (up to this point) since recordkeeping began in 1871. This temperature may have been influenced by the Great Baltimore Fire.

A tornado occurs in Moscow, Russia. It starts in a thunderstorm in Tula region. It travels northward, passing through eastern suburbs of Moscow into Yaroslavl region. When the cloud approaches remote Moscow suburbs, it forms three tornado funnels, destroying suburban settlements and Lefortovo district within the city itself. The main tornado is recorded by thousands of witnesses in Moscow, but few outside of the city. The Dean of Sukhanovo church reports that the cloud passes some 10 miles west of his town, through the villages of Kapotnya (200 homes destroyed), Chagino (65 out of 67 homes) and Khokhlovka; all three of these settlements are now within Moscow city limits. Nearer suburbs of Lyublino and Karacharovo are completely demolished too. The tornado breaks into the city proper in Lefortovo District, destroying the freight yard of the Kursk railroad, then shaving off the Annenhof Forest – an old, neglected park in Lefortovo (north of the present-day Aviamotornaya subway station). It passes through the Lefortovo barracks, tearing roofs from masonry buildings, passes over the Basmanny District into Sokolniki Park and leaves the city in a northward direction. Apparently, the tornado then fades way, thus destruction in the densely populated Basmanny is far less than in Lefortovo. Estimates of people killed by the tornado vary widely, ranging from 9 to 100.

About 3:30 in the afternoon EST, a tornado forms within a severe thunderstorm near Chappaqua, New York. The tornado quickly begins to produce damage in the hamlet, destroying several structures and killing two people. Homes are knocked off their foundations and rolled over along the tornado's path. The tornado tracks directly through Chappaqua before moving towards the Hudson River. Upon reaching the river, the tornado becomes a waterspout thatias powerful enough to uncover the river bed below it. The waterspout eventually dissipates by 4:00 pm EST.  (The tornado was later rated as F3 on the modern-day Fujita scale.) The tornado leaves $100,000 (1904 USD; $2.4 million 2009 USD) worth of damage in its wake. Hail associated with the same storm cell also inflicts damage upon a few structures. The tornado is known as the worst disaster in the history of Chappaqua.
