Washington Senators outfielder Ed Delahanty dies when he is swept over Niagara Falls. He is apparently kicked off a train by the train's conductor for being drunk and disorderly. The conductor said Delahanty was brandishing a straight razor and threatening passengers after he consumed five whiskies. After being kicked off the train, Delahanty starts his way across the International Railway Bridge connecting Buffalo, New York with Fort Erie (near Niagara Falls) and falls or jumps off the bridge (some accounts say Delahanty was yelling about death that night). Whether Delahanty died from his plunge over the Falls or drowned on the way to the Falls is uncertain. His body is found at the bottom of Niagara Falls two weeks after his death.

A hurricane makes landfall near Avalon, New Jersey, with 80-mph winds. It causes severe damage in portions of New Jersey, especially Atlantic City. Flooding from this storm occurs in parts of Maryland, Delaware, Washington DC, Virginia, New Jersey, and New York. Coastal areas of the Mid-Atlantic experience strong winds which down many telephone and telegraph poles and wires. High winds extend from North Carolina to Connecticut. Thirty people are left missing and presumed killed from a shipwreck in Chincoteague, Virginia. In Ocean City, Maryland, the hurricane is considered the worst in 40 years. The hurricane produces 80 mph winds and rough waves along the Delaware Capes, indicating hurricane-force winds affected the state. Along the Delaware coast, the schooner Hattie A. Marsh is smashed against the rocks by strong winds from the hurricane, killing five people. In New York City, high winds sway buildings, spires, and bridges, overturning wagons on the Brooklyn Bridge. At least a few buildings are deroofed and many homes are flooded or damaged, especially in Brooklyn. One death occurs in the city. On Long Island, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt directly experiences the effects of the hurricane while on a yacht. The life of the president is briefly threatened due to the rough conditions, though none on board the yacht suffer any problems from the hurricane. Overall, the storm causes 57 fatalities.
