The first-ever college football bowl game, the "Tournament of Roses East–West Football Game," is held in Pasadena, California, pitting the unbeaten and unscored upon University of Michigan Wolverines against the once-defeated (3-1-1) Stanford University Indians. Michigan, the first of the "Point-a-Minute" football teams coached by Fielding H. Yost, had beaten all of its opponents by an average score of 50 to 0 in its regular season games (501 points in 10 games), and was leading Stanford, 49 to 0, when the game was stopped eight minutes early. A crowd of 8,500 people attended at Tournament Park. (The annual New Year's Day bowl game in Pasadena is referred to now as the Rose Bowl.)

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 strikes the Fox Islands in the U.S. Alaskan Territory.

The Nurses Registration Act of 1901 goes into effect in New Zealand, the first nation in the world to require state registration of nurses.

Edward Clark dies at age 79 in Washington, D.C. He was Architect of the U.S. Capitol since 1865 and oversaw the completion of the United States Capitol dome and technological improvements to the Capitol including the addition of electricity, steam radiators, and elevators. He was born on August 15, 1822 in Philadelphia, PA.

A train collision inside the New York Central Railroad's Park Avenue Tunnel kills 17 people and injures 38— mostly by scalding from a ruptured boiler — leading to increased demand for electric-powered trains and to the banning of steam locomotives in New York, NY.

José Santos Zelaya is re-elected as President of Nicaragua for a second four-year term.

Marcellus Hartley dies at age 74 while attending a business meeting. He was an arms dealer, industrialist and merchant. He owned the Remington Arms Company, and later in life he took interest in financial matters of many organizations, being a board member of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, the International Banking Corporation, the American Surety Company, the Manhattan Railroad Company and many more. He was born in 1827.

General Francis J. Herron dies at age 64 in New York, NY. He was a (U.S.) Union Army commander and Medal of Honor winner who died in poverty after his retirement. He was born on February 27, 1837, in Pittsburgh, PA.

The German imperial government announces that Friedrich Alfred Krupp, the owner and operator of the Krupp Arms Manufacturing Company, is the wealthiest man in the German Empire, with an annual income of 20,000,000 marks (equivalent to USD $5,000,000 in 1902 and more than $150 million in 2019).

At 4:00 PM, stratus clouds are observed moving rapidly from the north and northeast. During the morning and early afternoon a light to fresh breeze occurs from the southwest; at 3:15 PM the direction of the wind changes to west, and its force increases to brisk for a brief time. By 4:00 PM, the velocity of the wind begin to increase rapidly as clouds increase. Near 6:00 PM, there is a strong thunderstorm in Baltimore with heavy rain.

Eleven people are killed and several others are injured as Baltimore is hit by a fierce tornado at 1:30 PM, accompanied by lightning, thunder, and heavy rain. The storm comes in from the southwest and unroofs hundreds of houses, unroots and blows down trees in public parks and streets, and damages many buildings. The tornado lasts less than 15 minutes. The tomado damage is concentrated in residential sections of Baltimore along the Patapsco River and the harbor. Downtown Baltimore has less damage: fallen signs and damage to some roofs. Of those who perished, nine drown in the harbor from open boats, one is killed by a falling tree and one by a live wire.
